About the Author
Christopher Bartlett's interest in flying started at school where he was an Air Cadet and a member of the British Interplanetary Society, at a time when believing in space flight seemed crazy to many. He completed his then obligatory two years' military service in the British Royal Air Force.
After taking a degree in Modern Chinese and Japanese at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University, he became, among other things, a professional translator of Japanese scientific and technical material. This included Japanese rocket tests. He also wrote for magazines in the Far East.
His fluency and understanding of English, French, and Japanese coupled with his extensive travels in Europe, the USA, and the Far East have enabled him to see air travel and aviation from many perspectives. His book Air Crashes and Miracle Landings is a classic, retelling and explaining some sixty incidents that have helped make flying so unbelievably safe today. The present book, PLANE CLEVER, evolved in part from his Flying Dictionary intended to explain the technical terms in that book.

The first section of this 310-page book deals with commercial flying and divides its material into sections on Booking, Airport Procedures, Aircraft and Boarding, Takeoff/Landing, Technical Matters and so on. Each section then explains various items within that broad category. The Booking section, for example, talks about such topics as booking a flight, deals, air miles, seating, dress, safe aircraft/airlines, most comfortable place to sit, etc. Part Two of the book is an A-to-Z dictionary of aeronautical terms. So, if you want to know about the A380, ADF, Airframers, APUs, Base Legs, Controlled Airspace, the EasyJet company, Glide Ratios, Hub Busters, Legacy Carriers, Miracle Landings, etc., this section should prove informative.
PLANE CLEVER is worth a look. Recommended.
NB. I was furnished an initial print copy of the book by the author.
