Characters From Planet Dead Book 1

Woman running into the woods that is filled with zombies. Author logo. Character name "Catherine"

Catherine Briggs (38 Years Old)

“Life is like a messed-up horror movie now,” Catherine said.

Sue cleared the sweat from her brows. Hanging over staring at the asphalt, Sue fought to catch her breath and said, “What?”

Catherine patted Sue’s back. “Being young, pretty, and popular isn’t enough,” Catherine said. Pulling out their last bottle of water, Catherine opened it and handed it to Sue. “You gotta fight if you wanna make it out alive, and by the looks of it, you’re not a fighter,” Catherine said with a laugh.

Sue put the clear liquid heaven to her lips and closed her eyes. A lukewarm rush of relief made its way past her lips and danced along her tongue before both air and water rushed their way down her throat When Sue opened her eyes, the water bottle was an empty, sunken shell. Sue’s hands ran down her sweaty thighs trying to ease the itch the repetitive movement started to create. Sue looked up at Catherine, and their eyes locked for a small moment before Sue tossed the bottle at Catherine’s feet.

Woman looking off in the woods surrounded by zombies. Author logo. Character name "Sue"

Sue (21 years old)

“Hello!” The pounded grew louder as it accompanied the shrieking voice that came from beyond the door. “Is anyone in there? Oh God!”

It was the scream of a young woman, her voice and fist growing louder. The woman pounded on the door for her life as she prayed she hadn’t imagined the dim light in the distance, that it wasn’t some kind of mirage of safety that her mind created. She slammed her hands into the wooden door. She glanced over her shoulder, an action that caused her heart to start pounding louder than her hands. A mix of sweat and tears covered her rose-pink face as she parted her lips to scream out once again.

“PLEASE! OPEN THE DOOR! GOD! PLEASE!”

The pleading wasn’t only grabbing Catherine’s attention but also the attention of her pursuers.

The butt of the shotgun was forced tightly into Catherine’s shoulder pocket. Cautiously, she made her way over toward the door. Her heart was still, no panic could be seen on her face. All that stood out was the look of a student, studying her surroundings and coming up with her next course of action.

Catherine was a product of war, one who fought over in countries most couldn’t pronounce for reasons most wouldn’t believe. She learned like the good student she was and remembered everything, never hoping to have to use any of it again, but fate had other plans. War was her class and, as she listened to the screaming and the pounding, she knew class was in session.

Now, she could walk away and ignore it all, but there would be no telling how many of those things would be outside in the morning. She could open the door and put an end to the screams with one fast pull of the trigger, but what would that make her? Her left hand came off the pump-action shotgun and she placed it on the lock of the door. She could have done a number of things, but there was really only one action she could live with in the morning. “Who are you?”

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Representation is a powerful thing and if you read some of the comments about this book you can tell that people are really connecting with and loving Catherine, which is a great thing for them and this series going forward. It isn't very often that a woman is chosen to lead a series like this. The most famous would probably be Milla Jovovich's Alice, from the Resident Evil movie franchise, and even less often is that main character a woman of color. Michonne of The Walking Dead and Selina from 28 Days Later have a new heroine to welcome to the club in Catherine" ~Horror, Sci-Fi, & More

The Planet Dead Series:
This series is a love letter from a fan of:
"Night of The Living Dead"
"Day of The Dead"
"Night of The Comet"
"Z-Nation"
"Dead Alive"
And "Slow Burn: Zero Day" I would like to thank everyone involved in these projects and the genre for pulling this little horror geek down into the undead rabbit hole.
I hope my world will bring you as much joy as all those worlds have brought me. Be sure to review.

Hey Survivor! My name is Sylvester Barzey and I am a best selling horror and fantasy author. I grew up in Bronx, NY, lived in the smallest state in the country for a while and then transplanted to Lawrence, GA.

I’m a military veteran with an addiction to all things horror. My overall goal is to shine a spotlight on BIPOC characters within the horror/fantasy genre. From a young age I was obsessed with horror movies, mostly slashers. The mythos of the “Final Girl” trope was always something that appealed to me. The act of taking someone and watching them overcome the greatest odds to be the ultimate survivor has been a strong attraction to the horror for me.

But, what I didn’t realize growing up was all these survivors were White. Seeing only one type of person rise, builds blocks within people’s minds, it causes them to think that surviving is a trait only in one race, which is far from the truth. The Black community (Black Women for sure) have survival built into their DNA. History has shown us that overcoming great odds is something Black people have always done.

Being that I couldn’t find the final girls I was looking for (There are some don’t get me wrong and they are amazing), I set out to create them. I want to produce Black heroes who overcome world shattering events and rise above them. My goal is for people to say Catherine Briggs’ name in the same breath as they say Sidney Prescott and Laurie Strode. It’s my mission to change horror so that my children can look at it and see themselves as survivors.

Random Facts:

I love The Golden Girls

I wonder what people taste like

I hate the snow

My Top Five Movies Are:

Scream, Candyman, Day of The Dead, Train To Busan & Mulan

4.0 out of 5 stars Let’s Get Zombiefied!!
By M on July 7, 2021
“I don’t think there are any good ideas left. It comes down to run or fight from what I see.”

The nation has fallen. The world is in despair. We are run over by zombies and the only goal now is to survive. Catherine Briggs is a survivor. She knows what it takes and will do whatever is necessary to reunite with her family. But when an unexpected visitor comes knocking on her door, will she maintain her strict policy of distrust or risk death for another?

This book reminded me how much I love zombies. I haven’t read a good zombie book or consumed good zombie content in a while and it’s not for any other reason than happenstance. I’ve had Sylvester Barzey’s book in my library for almost a year now (my apologies for that!) and am so glad I picked it up. It was perfectly what I was in the mood for.

This is a fast paced, fun, eccentric cast of characters with a wild storyline. The scares are there and ready to play and the suspense is well done. Barzey leaves the book on a bit of a cliffhanger with questions of what’s to come because it is, yes that’s right, a SERIES! So if you’re looking to dive into something more world consuming, something that’ll be a full journey with horror and guts, this might just be the post-apocalyptic book for you! 🧟
