New York Times bestselling author of One Last Word and Coretta Scott King award-winning Bronx Masquerade Nikki Grimes offers fresh novel in verse story about young heartbreak and hope.

For twelve years, Joylin Johnson's life has been just fine. A game of basketball with the boys-especially her friend Jake-was all it took to put a smile on her face. Baggy jeans, T-shirt, and hair in a ponytail were easy choices. Then, everything suddenly seemed to change all at once. Her best girl friend is now flirting with her best guy friend. Her clothes seem all wrong. Jake is acting weird, and basketball isn't the same. And worst of all, there is this guy, Santiago, who appears from . . . where? What lengths will Joy go to--and who will she become--to attract his attention?

In short poems that perfectly capture the crazy feelings of adolescence and first crushes, award-winning author Nikki Grimes has crafted a delightful, often hilarious, heart-tugging story.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“The story is by turns touching and laugh-out-loud funny, and readers will appreciate the time they spend with Joylin, her family, and her friends as they live, grow, and learn as individuals and together.” ―starred review, School Library Journal

“[Grimes'] accessible verse and clear themes of self-acceptance and open-mindedness ring true. A work that should help adolescent readers find the courage and humor to grow into the individuals they already are.” ―
Kirkus Reviews

“[Grimes'] realistic novel has solid middle-school appeal and avoids preaching.” ―
Horn Book Magazine

“The vocabulary is rich, the characters well-drawn, and the scenes realistic. This is a serious but not too serious look at growing up from a master poet.” ―
Library Media Connection

“Readers will cringe, laugh, and most of all relate to [Joylin's] learning process as it is sensitively and sweetly depicted here. . . . Has broad appeal and solid curricular possibilities.” ―

Nikki Grimes dabbles in watercolors and collage (she created one of the illustrations for One Last Word!), she crafts handmade books, cards and beaded jewelry, is a textile artist, and once sang, danced and acted her way down the east coast of China. Her primary passion, though, is writing books for children and young adults. Her complete bibliography of trade and mass market books number more than 106. Her trade titles include historical fiction, biographies, graphic novels, chapter books, and novels in prose. However, poetry and novels-in-verse are her genres of choice.

A bestselling author, Grimes was inducted into the Black Authors Hall of Fame in 2023, is the recipient of the Virginia Hamilton Lifetime Achievement Award, the ALAN Award for significant contributions to young adult literature, the 2017 Children's Literature Legacy Award, the 2016 Virginia Hamilton Literary Award, and the 2006 NCTE Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children. Other awards include both a Sibert and a Printz Honor for Ordinary Hazards, her memoir. She received the Coretta Scott King Award for Bronx Masquerade; CSK Honors for Jazmin's Notebook, Talkin' About Bessie, Dark Sons, The Road to Paris, and Words With Wings; the NAACP Image Award for New York Times Bestseller Barack Obama:Son of Promise, Child of Hope; The Myra Cohn Livingston Award for Poetry; Arnold Adoff Poetry Award for One Last Word; Claudia Lewis Poetry Award; two Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Awards; two Boston Globe-Horn Book Honors; Horn Book Fanfare for Talkin' About Bessie; The Horace Mann Upstanders Book Award; the VOYA Non-Fiction Honor; The Lion & The Unicorn Award for Excellence in North American Poetry; International Youth Library White Ravens List; ALA Notables for What is Goodbye? and Words With Wings; Notable Books for a Global Society, and been recognized with numerous awards for her body of work. Most notably, she was nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.

The novel Growin' marked Grimes' entry into children's literature, followed by Something on My Mind—her first book of poetry—A Dime a Dozen, From A Child's Heart. Her novels in verse are close to her heart, and include Words Wiith Wings, Garvey's Choice—a novel in tanka poems—A Girl Named Mister, Dark Sons, and Planet Middle School. Other popular works include Aneesa Lee & The Weaver's Gift, Chasing Freedom, the Dyamonde Daniel chapter book series, the beloved Meet Danitra Brown, Wild, Wild Hair, and Welcome Precious.

A much anthologized poet, her own works include the Golden Shovel poetry collections, One Last Word and Legacy: Women Poets of the Harlem Renaissance, both for middle grades. Her poetry picture books include Pocketful of Poems, Poems in the Attic, Thanks a Million, When Daddy Prays, Southwest Sunrise, The Watcher, A Walk in the Woods, and Lullaby for the King. Here joyful books for toddlers, Bedtime for Sweet Creatures, Off to See the Sea, and Playtime for Restless Rascals, all illustrated by Elizabeth Zunon, are popular additions to her catalog. Glory in the Margins:Poems for the Pulpit, and its sequel, Glory, Too (Jan. 2025) are works for adults.

In addition to her books, Grimes has written articles for such magazines as Essence, Horn Book, Today's Christian Woman, Book Links, English Journal, and Image: Journal of Arts & Religion, among others. Her work has been featured on NPR.

Those who follow her on social media know that Grimes is also a photographer and avid gardener with a special penchant for roses. They also know that a new poem is apt to pop up on her wall at any given time, especially if something heavy is on her heart, usually in response to a report of social injustice.

Social justice is one of the themes readers find in books written by Grimes, often set against an urban landscape. Her themes, though, are wide-ranging: bullying, friendship, foster care, forgiveness, gratitude, empathy, identity, mental illness, loss, sexual assault—all find a place in her work. Whether the themes are light or heavy, the consistent thread of hope, in stories laced with humor, are hallmarks of books written by Nikki Grimes.

Her forthcoming titles to watch for are A Cup of Quiet, (Bloomsbury, April 2025) illustrated by Cathy Ann Johnson, and Stronger Than with co-Author Stacy Wells, (HeartDrum, 2026) illustrated by E.B. Lewis. Watch for new additions to her Dyamonde Daniel chapter book series in 2025, as well! Check the bibliography on her website for a full listing.

Great book

Great book
I am a middle school teacher and got this book for my classroom. It is a great book for a classroom library. A story in poems by I iconic black author. This was a used book which I was aware of, but it wasn’t in a good enough condition to be labeled “like new”

It came in really well because last time I ordered one on a different shop on amazon and it came all wet but I could really count on this because of the way the packaging came. No wrinkles or missing pages great book too. I could relate to it a lot if you were to write an essay this gives you lot of inspiration.

    See above for full synopsis.

Told in short poems Planet Middle School explores so many themes it's hard to believe the book is only 154 pages and a delightfully quick read. Joylin is a tomboy and an awesome basketball player. She tries to teach her artist younger brother to play in the hope that their dad will notice him more. She's dealing with her body changing against her will and her best friends (one a boy, one a girl) are trying to make her understand she's still the same person. She's experiencing her first crush.

This book is recommended for girls in grades 6 and up. Reluctant readers will be drawn to it's quick pace and easy to read style while appreciating Nikki Grimes' understanding of what tweens/young teens are going through. I laughed and cried and loved it from the opening poem to the closing one.

Planet Middle School is a great read, told in poems, about a tomboy who is beginning to grow up and discover herself.

I'm trying to go through this review as unbiased as I can because I love Nikki Grime's works. Though this isn't my favorite, this is at least in my top 15.

Joylin is experiencing the 'joys' (pun and sarcasm intended) of growing up into a teenager. She can't even get through a game of basketball without getting distracted by the boys. Her best friends are beginning to make those googly eyes at each other. AND her body is changing without her permission. Can things get any worse?

The plot is explored territory, but this is a very interesting take on going through 'The Changes'. This includes finding your style and becoming your own person, rather than being a clone of someone else.

The writing is great. Though I'm usually not a fan of books told in poetry, this is probably the best I have read. Some of the metaphors used are very nice, but Joylin's voice shines through. Since she is witty and tomboy-ish, there wouldn't be anything 'beautiful' per se.
The poetry wouldn't let the personalities of the minor characters (not Joylin, given it's inside her head), so I guess I can't comment on that.

The only thing I didn't like about this book is that it didn't delve deeper into the mind. If anything, the poetry just scratches the surface of what it's like to be going through 'The Changes'. And I wish it could have been thicker.

Overall, Planet Middle School is a great read, though very thin. Only 160 pages. If you're looking for a read that will make you laugh big and gasping at it's honesty, this book is for you.

  • Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2024
The school try to force the 7th graders to read this over the summer!! While I'm sure this book resonates well with girls changing and going through puberty... It doesn't do a thing for my son or the boys in his grade. The other parents have complained about this reading as well. So if your a young FEMALE this might be a fine read but not for boys. Schools need to get back to basics and start using neutral books with over all moral arc's. They refuse to use history as reading material. Over all I can only give it a 3 stars bc it is for FEMALES..

This book was awesome. The characters in the book were real to me. Each person has to figure out who they are and stick to it and not try to be anyone else. It also highlights what true friends really are. Joy, Jake, and Kerelee were all true friends.
