I'm not trying to knock D'Addario/Planet Waves here either. I have Planet Waves from maybe 15 years ago that are still working today. I plugged my old Planet Waves and a few others, and they work just fine. The quality just isn’t as good as it used to be. If your adamant about getting these cables, then save yourself the hassle and either 1) buy in person so you can test the cables yourself or…really what you should do is 2) buy from another manufacturer. You might say "These cables can't be as bad as the reviewers say they are can they?". The Answer is Yes! Yes they can!
I took a pair of pliers and tried to adjust the internal wiring, and found that the outer shielding was touching the inner lead through the plastic, causing a short. I attempted to repair that by pulling the shielding away. It helped, but, if I wiggled the cable or twisted it the wrong way, the sound would cut back out again at a point an inch behind the solders within the wire itself. The break in the wire was, clearly, in the part of the wire that was protected by the metal and plastic sheathing that screws over the connector end. This means that the cable likely wasn't even tested before it was shipped for someone to purchase.
Nobody should ever have to do this with a brand new cable, especially. This is unacceptable for a premium-priced guitar cable. It's also unacceptable from a brand such as D'Addario. I've had better experiences with $10 generic cables over all these years. I saw the many DOA reviews here and told myself, "Ah, it must be a small minority," and ordered it anyway. That was a mistake. These cables belong in the trash. Very disappointed.
Buy the Ernie Ball cable instead.
I prefer this over Mogami 2524 by a long shot. I find the Mogami a bit harsh, and the upper frequencies are cleared than the Fender cable.
Another good cable to try is a Belden cable made by Vertex Effects. That one actually has a higher capacitance, but is sti very high fidelity. Smooth in the top end, but not too bright. I was surprised actually. It might be perfect for a bright or harsh sounding rig/chain or single coils (but I even use them with humbuckers) ... But for a standard cae with no flaws to the sound, this Planet Waves is very tough to beat. You really can't go wrong!
I gave it 4 stars on price, because if it were cheaper, I'd buy 2! A discounted 2-pack would be nice.
As for price compared to other brands, I had tried mogami gold & platinum, as well as live wire elite before hand. I like the live wire, but didn't like the rigidness of the cable. The mogami flat out didn't impress me. The planet waves seems to sound just as good if not better than both cables with the live wire coming in on it's heels. However, I don't really support super expensive cables, as I feel like your not getting what you pay for.
All in all the american stage is a great, transparent sounding cable that won't be mistaken for sounding weak and muddy. The bass comes across beautifully clean, not quite as stout as the live wire elite, but more transparent. The high end and mid-range is noticeably more clear, and better clean in my opinion. Price played a big part in what I was comfortable spending on cables, and I think this met the criteria I was looking for.
