4 out of 5 stars
All in all, they work well.
I have three of these, with different magnet designs and bag colors. My kids love them. They ARE heavy after loading them up with food. So if you have a weak child it will help them get stronger, lol. My kids are 9, 7, and 5 years old, and walk to and from school everyday with out a problem, but again they do add significant weight to their backpacks. The big dipper works well inside the metal box and in the outside pocket for anything dry to semi-wet. The silicone lining on the big dipper is pretty bad because it falls off every time you remove the lid. We just stopped using it, which is why that container works well if it's inside the metal box or in the bags pockets, not as well outside it. For dry stuff, you can stick a rubber band around it and toss it inside a backpack by itself with no prob, with out the silicone lining. I've done that... If I have something really wet to pack for the kids recess snack I use these metal Kids Conserve containers http://www.amazon.com/Kids-Konserve-Stainless-Steel-Containers-Leak-Proof/dp/B0032UXTCG which are totally leak proof. (I wish they made the kids conserve ones shallower, then they'd fit better in the planet box sections, but the medium and small ones still do a good job in the outside pocket of the planetbox).I will use the big dipper inside the metal box sometimes, usually for hummus or mashed up avocado, in place of a sandwich. Otherwise those containers are always used outside of the metal box.The little dippers silicone piece seals well for keeping in salad dressing or peanut butter, but it's tough to clean out, (best if hand washed) and also tough to remove the silicone piece when you clean it. The silicone also stains. If you put the little dipper in one of the left compartments of the box, you can still fit some crackers, or cut carrots next to it in the same compartment. I do that often when I fill it with ranch dressing or peanut butter, or hummus.I tend to put popcorn, nuts, chips, carrots, spinach, or mini bell peppers in the top skinny section. (My kids hate cheese sticks so even though that looks like the perfect spot for cheese sticks, there are plenty of other things that can go in that part.)My daughter loves those little clementines in her lunch, so I just peel them and break them into halves and they fit perfectly in one of the left two compartments, and they stay dry because the orange sacks haven't been cut or punctured. Same goes for kiwi's: if you don't peel the skin and just cut off the ends, then cut the whole kiwi in half, it stays pretty dry in the box (face the cut side down). You can eat the skin on kiwi's (just wash them first)....My son loves apples, and those are a little harder to fit with out some finagling. I usually quarter the apples (typical gala sized) and then slice off the bit of core that's on each wedge. But when I pack them in the box I have to slice them up into 8 pieces first, then cut crosswise once, and only about 1/3 of the apple with fit into one of the left compartments. He usually eats the other 2/3rds as a recess snack which I wrap in plastic, or toss in a kids conserve container, and put in the water bottle compartment. My kids also like dried mango folded in half put into the treat container, or a couple of yogurt covered raisins, or jelly beans, or chocolate chips, or you know... anything small and tasty.I have not found issues with things leaking into the other compartments or food shifting, but I also tend to pack the boxes pretty full. Actually there was one day when my son's came home a little wet, and it was because he left an opened mangled orange in there... He's the apple eater, not the orange eater....so he picked at it, left it a mess, and didn't eat it.I hand wash their boxes every day because my dishwasher fills up only about every other night, but of course they need the boxes ready each morning. It takes a little getting use to washing by hand compared to hand washing a one compartment eco lunch box that we used for years with my older two kids. But once you get a system, it's only about 30-45 seconds to wash each box. I use a scrubber like this and just brush along each compartment edge and a quick line down each middle and that gets every spot really well: http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-Dispensing-Brush/dp/B00004OCLK/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1431636539&sr=1-1&keywords=oxo+scrubberAnd I have my kids use a seventh generation wipe to clean the bags when they accumulate crumbs. What I like about these boxes the most is that they kind of force me to pack better lunches for my kids. Sure you can toss the exact same variety of stuff into a sack lunch and keep things healthy, but I tend to pack only 3 things when I don't use this box. With this box, my kids always get a fruit AND a veggie (not just a fruit), plus a dried carb of some sort, a main protein, and a little treat.Anyway, all in all, these work well. They are very durable and can hold a lot of food without extra containers or plastic wraps if you use them appropriately. But if you want something completely effortless, find another box with bigger, but fewer, compartments.

I know, you are probably thinking, I must be crazy to be considering a lunch box this expensive. I thought the same thing. I don't regret it at all. 7 months later my 6 year old is still using it daily. I love the compartments and that I don't have to wash multiple containers daily, just one. It has held up well. Not sure what my kid does to the carrying case but it sure does get dirty. Nothing a little scrub in the sink can't take care of. I have even put it on gentle in the wash and dried it in the dryer on a stand (front loading). Cleans up well. Love it! Only compliant is it is heavy when ice pack. Buy it ... you won't be disappointed. Promise.

The large-size lunch bag is perfect for our 4 year olds needs!

Update **our daughter has used this for preschool for a total of 5 months. The inner plastic lining has torn greatly in many places from it being washed in the sink and the tin box rubbing against it. Even using permanent marker, our writing always rubs off each day. I wouldn’t buy this again and don’t recommend it for the cost. It’s fun for the different compartments so food doesn’t mix.

You are looking at, perhaps, one of the best lunchtime boxes made for elementary school kids, maybe even adults. Know your child will be presented with everything you packed. There are two removable, seal-able containers, which will not leak, however, there are no seals on the metal-on-metal enclosures, so everything else will leak. For example, if you put strawberries and blue-berries in the metal portion, close it up and turn it sideways, it will leak. Be smart about your choices and use things that will not leak, carrots and celery sticks, for instance. A traditional sized piece of sandwich bread will not fit unless you cut the sides. Another solution, get your rolling pin, smash the bread, lay on the sandwich ingredients and roll it up, cut it like Sushi then place the bit sized pieces in the sandwich enclosure. My kid loved the magnetic stickers. The best part about this lunch box is that it's all stainless steel metal, so you can throw it in the dishwasher and walk away. Also, your kid will have a lot of explaining to do like where it was purchased and how much it cost and.... well, you get the picture.

Four stars because the whole leakage thing.

** Don't forget to order the flat Ice Pack

I debated A LOT about buying this lunchbox because 1) I was concerned about fitting food into the little areas, and 2) PRICE . . . because let's face it . . . it is EXPENSIVE! After watching the little videos done by kids on their website I finally decided to give it a try. I also watched the video with my kids to help create some interest.

I got it (the stainless steel container + 2 round containers, carrying case, & magnets) soon after ordering it over the summer. My daughter REALLY wanted to get started using it so we gave it a test run a couple of days at daycamp. She loved it and was very excited about using it when school actually started.

Our school has a short lunch period and what I love about this is that she can just open ONE THING and have her lunch ready to eat. It's so much easier to wash ONE thing, too. Four weeks into school we have had a couple of incidents of a little leakage from cucumbers and raspberries so it's about time to wash the carrying bag, but if I just have to do that a few times throughout the year I'll be thrilled.

Regarding my concerns: I don't have trouble fitting food into the little areas. I do have to think about it a little, but so far it hasn't kept me from sending any lunch items or created any additional stress. My daughter (first grade) gets a healthy lunch that she doesn't have to RUSH through which I LOVE. The price . . . well, that's gotta be a personal judgement call. It is expensive but I've been very pleased with it so far.

So, it seemed really insane when a friend suggested this lunchbox for my 4 year old and I realized that it cost nearly $70 with shipping. But then I thought about it and decided that every year we were spending about $20 on a new cheapest-at-Target lunchbox and set of containers, so if we could get three years of use out of this thing, it would work out more or less (writing down $10 for the convenience of less shopping).

Now that it's here, it actually makes even better sense. First off, it makes lunch packing lots faster because we don't have to go hunting for containers; we just pull the metal tray out of the dishwasher. That means some minutes gained and stress lost in our mornings.

Next, our younger daughter, for whom this was bought, is very methodical about meals, and she likes setting up her lunch just so and will get in a snit if something is not going well. A snit will mean that she will not eat much lunch, and therefore the afternoon will probably have problems, and so on. This thing takes care of setup, and so between time saved and snits avoided she's been eating much more of her lunch.

Finally, when this thing comes home, cleanup is fast. The steel tray gets emptied into the compost (usually not much left) put into the dishwasher, likewise the containers if they got used, the icepack goes into the freezer, and we're done.

Lastly, my initial reasoning seems less far-fetched than I feared it might: everything seems sufficiently well made and durable that it seems likely to endure daily use for at least three years.

So, despite the price, this does rate five stars just for greatly reducing the amount of time and trouble surrounding our younger child's lunch and making it more likely that she will actually eat it.
