First hand view of Planned Parenthood politics of destruction when faced with losing grant money from Susan G. Komen
Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2020Verified Purchase
An interesting and eye-opening account of the political impact of Planned Parenthood and the lengths they will go to ensure their government dollars (yours and mine) continue to flow to them. They represent themselves as a provider of women’s health but they are really a political arm of the Democratic Party. Each Democrat must agree in the unlimited abortion agenda of PP or you are not welcome in the Democratic Party. Susan G. Komen, an organization truly committed to women’s health failed ALL women when it capitulated to the tactics of destruction by Planned Parenthood when Komen tried to change their Grant making policies and PP objected.

It isn't John Steinbeck, James Michener or even Danielle Steele. It is plodding, undramatic and plainly written. It is a simple story about a woman who worked her way through school and built her credentials and reputation over the years only to see herself used as a punching bag, a scapegoat, a target of calumny. She is a nice person who it seems could be like so many other nice ladies I have worked for and with over the years. She found herself in the midst of a political maelstrom, hung out to dry. That's okay. She kept notes. She knew her stuff, she did her homework.
The eye-opener is that Planned Parenthood is truly a bully and was allowed to run roughshod over the Komen people - the Komen leadership stood down, they yielded. It wasn't so much that Komen was going to not make any more grants to Planned Parenthood of the type they had been making - that amount of less than $700,000 at that time was a teeny drop in the bucket of Planned Parenthood's billion dollar budget. All Komen wanted to do was have grants out there that could do the most good and that they would be able to measure those benefits. Metrics. It's like how people do business in the real world - you need to put your money where it will do the most good - and as well in the "non-profit" world, you need to be able to show your supporters that their donations are having a real effect.
Both Ari Fleischer and Karl Rove appear in the story and they pretty much - in my humble opinion - were their usual selves and for the life of me, I can't understand why they are called upon to "consult".
I liked this book mainly because Mrs. Handel stood up for herself, did not let herself be rolled over by a machine that is very powerful and destructive of all who challenge it.

Eyeopening account as to how "things" work. Political corruption at it's worst. A private company, run by the daughter of a former Texas Governor somehow gets hundreds of millions of OUR TAX DOLLARS to use as they wish---which includes trying to destroy a well meaning woman trying to help the cause of curing breast cancer.

This book reminds me of the scene in Blazing Saddles where the man puts a gun to his own head and threatens to shoot.
If the objective of this book is to bash Planned Parenthood the author pulled the trigger. Planned Parenthood comes across as politically savvy with a strong message and one voice. The Komen organization is portrayed as amazingly out of touch, prone to hiring numerous expensive political PR firms, disorganized and unable to come up with a coherent message. Komen's founder is portrayed as out of touch and not really in control. The author is clearly out of her league and should have stayed in local politics. No matter which side of the debate you are on as to whether Komen should have been founding Planned Parenthood their strategy, decision making and inability to deal with the issue effectively make me question how well the organization will function in the future. To those breast cancer patients hoping for progress or a cure that is a real shame.

The Komen controversy caught public attention from both right and left. And for many, the portrayal of Planned Parenthood as victim and the assumptions that (a) PP actually provided services for women which many knew it did not and (b) that the grant would be disasterous for PP and end essential protection for women which anyone who looked into the assets and federal subsidies of PP knew was not so, were not credible. Many women were asking--what's the story behind the story--why the hoopla?
Karen Handel was clearly a scapegoat. Some may read the book and see it as a victim's defense. Others may find her explanation of the bullying of PP, the connection of persons in various government agencies and positions of power whose ideologies needed to pay off political debts to supporters favoring PP not only believable, but scary. When a private, wealthy money-making, international corporation like PP can force a private group to give up their duly accepted goals and rules for grant giving and be aided by a non-investigative media, then what protection is there for benefactors to decide their own course?
A good read; provides many insights into what never makes news as well as what does. She could have provided some outside witnesses to support her narration.

An excellent explanation of the ins and outs of overbearing organizations and our government's real agenda. I will never contribute to Susan G Komen again because of their caving into the terrorist tactics of Planned Parent hood. And I have had a lumpectomy.
