So we start the book with high school sweethearts Alexa and Collin. Almost immediately you watch Collin cheat on Alexa and off rolls the plot from there. You're reading the story from different character's points of view. Odd though that they all sound the same. Meaning- when I was reading it I could more so hear the author telling the story... not Collin's (for example) character.
One cannot contain the level of cheese in this book. Want an example? Collin is an 18 year old all American male. He's heading off to college to play football. He's the most popular guy in his high school. So can you please explain to me why he's superdeduper excited about a kid's bouncy house at his HS graduation party? Here's what he says about his awesome party he's throwing for all his friends:
"We even rented a bouncy house! There's no way in hell anyone will ever be able to top this party."
Seriously? This tough guy who's constantly drinking through-out the story (and people serve him beer over and over even though he's not 21. *unrealistic) is uber pumped about a bouncy house that's actually made for 6 year olds?!?! Why not go all out and get a clown and ponies?! There's more throughout the story that just doesn't make sense... but I'll just use this one to prove that I didn't like the character development. I felt it was very unreal. The men were unbelievable. A 100 year old sparkly vampire from Twlight was more believable then just your average joe teenager from this book.
I just didn't like the writing style. It was awkward. It was choppy.Read more ›
Collin quickly realizes that what he did was wrong and that Alexa is who he loves. He believes his near slip up at the party is safe and Alexa will never know. But of course secrets never stay hidden and the truth does come out. But Collin believes that since he did not technically cheat that Alexa will forgive him if he can just explain things to her. But for Alexa regardless of how far things went with the other girl, the intention was still there. And she is done with Collin.
For me the storyline kind of stalled out after that. I felt that they both moved on very quickly for having been so in love with each other. This guy Nolan just seemed to good to be true. I have nothing against instalove in the books I read but this one just did not sit well with me for some reason. The storyline with Collin and Summer was a bit more believable . I loved how they were friends first before anything else.
The meat of the story, the stuff that pulls you in and makes you fall in love with a story or a character was nonexistent.
It's like listening to a highlight reel on the radio and the announcer just assumes you were at that game and that you know the players and you saw it all happen, so he doesn't have to bother filling you in. But the parts that you did follow find't even make sense. I just couldn't connect at all.
Alexa and Collin were high school sweethearts and thought that they would spend their lives together. One night changes everything for them. Colllin drunkenly crosses a line and Alexa soon finds out. They must face the consequences of one mistake and how drastically it changes their future. Trust is broken, love is tested and both their lives are changed.
Alexa and Collin both face a new futures, new friendships and relationships, and the journey is beautiful to read. I found myself cheering for the typical happy ending but as the story progressed I happily let go of that hope and was sucked into the new direction that they were both moving towards.
Did I mention the steamy sex? No? Well let me take a minute to do that now. It's hot! This is not an erotic novel but it does have very well written love scenes that will leave you wanting more. A lot more!
Planning on Forever is Ashley Wilcox's first novel and it's a fantastic entrance to the writing world. She has a wonderful writing style, memorable characters and a great story. It accurately reflects the unexpected heartbreaks that life brings and the surprises that help us heal.
