Basically Alex is obsessed with Penelope. He knows every aspect of her life and pretty much interferes in order to make sure that no harm comes to her. Alex is good at this for the most part because he is a genius. But of course there would be not plot if things went exactly as planned.
I read this book in almost one sitting. Only thing that stopped me was actually have to do things like going to work and doing errands that were absolutely necessary. I was on the edge of my seat because I just had to know if he was going to get caught and I just had to know what Alex's end game was. I love stalker books because I like to see the thought process that they use in order to rationalize the stalking. What made me like this book was the twist that it took. Can't say what that is because It will give it away, but I loved the direction that it took. At first I was kind of put off, but the end is what absolutely clinched it. It made sense and I was able to go with it. You should definitely read this if you like to read something a little on the dark side. It's not too dark and not too light. Its perfect.
Alex is a beyond-genius-level geneticist working on important research developments at a university. He has a tendency to be obsessive and the most recent object of his obsession is Penelope, a student who attends his school. He knows everything about her, right down to her genetic makeup. Alex likes to influence every decision Penelope makes and tends to take credit for her success and happiness. However, his need to control every aspect of her life begins to spiral out of control and the outcome wasn’t what I was expecting—at all.
At one point while reading, I began to question my own sanity because I started to care for Alex. The more I got to know about his upbringing and his daily life, the more sympathy I had for him. The fact that there is a happy ending for someone like Alex is a testament to the writing of Ms. Lockwood. She is so adept at making him a real (albeit disturbed) person and I have no doubt that you will be drawn into his twisted world immediately like I was. I enjoyed this brilliant book and look forward to whatever Ms. Lockwood writes next!
Wow!!! This book is definitely different, but amazing. The author really leaves you guessing as to what Alex’s motives are for almost the entire book. As I was reading this book, I was unsure as to what he was actually doing. What his motives were. Was he a stalker extraordinaire? A dedicated research scientist? Or just plain wacko?
As the story develops, we learn more about Alex and Penelope, without losing the mystery of what he’s actually up to. I loved the suspense and the way she gives you an incredible story without making it nice and simple or predictable.
The ending was surprising, not what i expected. I hoped the ending would have been a little stronger. But I do highly recommend this book, if you are in the mood for a crazy tale, that is not your typical stalker story.
This book is so different from anything I have ever read. It is deliciously dark and conflicting. I have never felt so conflicted over a character. To be in the head of the stalker and to get their perspective. It excited me and creeped me out. I wanted to know more. I even sympathized with the character some. However, there are so many twists and turns you will not see coming and you will be left reeling after this book.
This was my first book by Erin, but I will definitely be reading more.
The actual writing in this book is a treat to read, too. There is such a strong sense of voice, insightful descriptions, and some of the turns of phrase are absolutely lyrical. Highly recommended!
