That said, all of my tall ships (mainly the tie fighters) fit in the bottom section along with the larger game pieces. I do have 1 smaller container that fits inside this one that holds all of the small pieces that you use the most during play (shields, focus, target locks, etc). This way, I can just put that small box on the play table and keep those pieces in there all the time.
I keep all my flat ships in the top section, including the large ship IG-2000. There is a perfect space for the in one of the corners. I also have 2 x-wings, 1 y-wing, 1 a-wing, 1 kihraxz fighter, and a tie interceptor in the top. This is where I put all of the navigation pieces too. It's plenty wide enough to fit all of the long pieces.
All in all, this is a really good solution for x-wing storage as long as you don't have TOO many large ships.
Update 1/2014: Works well for Mindstorms EV3 too!. All parts fit. You need to get creative sorting parts and labeling, since there are many different small parts, but I don't think there is a box out there that is this compact that allows organization of all the parts.
So far I've managed to fit an HWK-290, B-Wing, 3 X-Wings, 3 Tie Fighters, a Tie Phantom, 2 Tie Interceptors, a Tie Advanced, a Millennium Falcon, all their maneuver dials AND stands with PLENTY of room to spare.
This case is a dream come true for this application. You'd be doing yourself a dis-service and wasting your money with any other option.
As others have observed, this is an excellent case that can be modified to be "the perfect case" for hardware and crafts, etc. Contrary to some other reviews, I would rate this superior in terms of modifying the inset sectional walls when compared to many years of competitor products. This is all why I am giving this case 5 stars.
HOWEVER. I was specifically misled into thinking this case had a handle. It is clear the manufacturers wanted to have one, but the upshot is that if your solution requires one, you will be disappointed. There are any number of reasons why the design process appears to have been altered. If you need an excellent bi-level sorter that is clear WITH a handle, I recommend you look at one of the Akro-Mils (usually blue) cases sold on this site and elsewhere.
With that disclaimer, and the knowledge that no polymer case will last forever if exposed to desert sun, the Plano 5231 is still an excellent case.
The first one of these I ordered was missing the black clamp to keep the bottom closed. I was very disappointed. I returned it and ordered a replacement which luckily came with all the pieces. Cutting the dividers and installing them was pretty straightforward once we realized that on the top specific inserts got in specific rows.
The only thing I dislike about this box is that the bottom larger compartment does not have enough dividers for all the possible inserts.
