It's obvious that the author has had experience in city government or is good at research. She shows us how even low-level jealous employees can sow discord without any help from the boss.
The discord makes Gwen doubt her ability to do her job and supervise her subordinates in a way that can allow the city to move forward. It doesn't help any that there is as much discord between her and her boyfriend, Jason, as there is at city hall. Gwen's memories of a traumatic childhood and Jason's unwillingness to engage in any contentious issues don't bode well for the future of their relationship.
And then there is the surprising diagnosis of the cause of Gwen's persistent stomach problems . . .
If you like a little seriousness mixed in with your romance, you'll like this novel.
Gwen with her emotions all over the place is a very believable character and is very easy to relate to. Her musings about being a good parent when she for one never had a loving family and also about the hardships of combining a successful career and taking care of a child I’m sure will resonate with many female readers. A great women’s fiction, written with humor but about serious and relevant matters. Five stars.
Overall, well-written, well-paced, and an enjoyable read!
Yet, as much as I appreciated the control-freak-learning-to-let-go plotline, I didn’t wholly enjoy Best Laid Plans & Other Disasters—mainly because I never liked Gwen. For most of the book, she’s fixated on her own problems and feelings without considering or communicating well with Jason. Page after page, she frustrated me with her behavior, which didn’t allow me to feel connected to her character—and made me feel a bit sorry for Jason. None of the supporting characters feel developed beyond their roles, positive or negative, relating to Gwen or Jason, and by the end, I (unfortunately) only felt relieved to be done with Gwen.
Now, while I don’t necessarily recommend this book, I will say that it has received several favorable reviews, and an interested reader could enjoy reading it, if so inclined. (Best Laid Plans & Other Disasters takes place after the story of Wallflower Blooming, offering the same setting and characters, but can be read easily on its own.)
Thanks to TLC Book Tours, I received a copy of Best Laid Plans & Other Disasters and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.
