Not good for peppers and basil. So-so for starting tomatoes and nasturtiums. Could not use as intended.

I really liked the idea of simply planting the pots with the seedlings. However, some seedlings (peppers and basil) really could not get going until I put them in plastic pots, and some died off before I could transplant them. The tomatoes and nasturtiums did well, but after the other seedlings had trouble, I decided to remove one of the peat pots. I discovered that the tomato roots were circling around, trapped under the first interior layer of the pots, unable to break through, although the pots were damp and soft. So I decided to remove all of them. I wet them thoroughly first, to soften them up, and then peeled off in layers. It was difficult and reqired a lot of time to remove the pot layers without tearing the roots. I may have left the seedlings in the pots too long, but I don't think that the tomato roots would have made it out of the pots if I had planted them in the ground. If you use them, put the pots in the ground as soon as your seedlings sprout to avoid root binding, and make sure the ENTIRE peat pot is below the surface of the dirt. Otherwise the top edges and sides will never soften up and may still trap the roots.

These things are flimsy and do not hold up. Only a couple of my seeds have sprouted and the container is full of MOLD and falling apart. I am unable to even pick them up. Do yourself a favor and get the plastic ones, you will not be disappointed.

Good product, watch your water

Almost all the seeds I planted sprouted. The ones that didn't I think was a seed issue not a pot issue because none of 1 plant variety germinated. I have the pots in a plastic tray that i add water to. The pots soak up the water to keep the soil moist. There is a fine line of how much to water as the pots tend to get very soft and may develop mold. When I went to plant some of the larger plants, I was surprised to find that there were roots already shooting out the sides of the pot. Which is a good sign as I heard that these types of pots don't breakdown as fast as they should and can trap the roots. But if month old flower seedling roots can break through I feel that the pot will breakdown as it should. This is my second order of these pots and I think when I go to plant them, I will stop watering a day or two before so that the pot will dry out before I plant it. The first bunch i planted were very soft and the carton tore when I picked them up. It wasn't bad, but I had to be careful to not tear the pot in half.

Absorb water well

I am not certain when the term peat pot became generic to incorporate various types of recycled fiber, but these are a fiber similar to egg cartons.

I picked these up to start my sweet peas this autumn and was pleasantly surprised by them. Like the actual peat, you plant them intact and they are organic. However, during the time you are growing them in the pots, they hold up well, and allow your seeds and seedlings to remain well watered and healthy.

These worked very nice for my purpose, and I will be buying more for my spring planting.

These pots tended to deteriorate faster than the seeds would sprout. When they did not almost immediately deteriorate, mold
rampaged across the surfaces. The seeds that did sprout seemed to ignore the mold but what a mess. There was little more
than putty left when and if these made into the garden.

Update: Mid-March, I tried starting carrots, beets, and onions in what I had left of these. Two weeks later, I started similar
plants in recycled seed trays from purchased flowers. Under identical conditions, indoors, under grow lamps, the seeds planted in
these pots are still feeble while those in the recycled plastic pots are robust, nearly ever seed sprouted, and are nearly twice
the size. The sprouts in the Plantation Seed Starter pots are so pathetic that I'll probably just discard the sprouts with the pots.

Once the weather clears and its safe to plant outside, you can simply break these apart and drop them into your garden ... the fibers will biodegrade into the soil as the plant grows. Zero waste when you compare them to the plastic ones that you have to throw away because you can't recycle them.

I bought these and used them for germinating my sunflower & watermelon seeds & they sprouted within 2 days. They have a hole in the bottom of them & their biodegradable so when you replant them you just transfer the whole pot into a bigger pot or in the ground & the biodegradable pot falls apart but gets used. Very easy to use & you don't have to take it out of the pot to transfer! Definitely buying more!

A Step Backward

The material is biodegradable and absorbent, but it a) promoted white fungus growth and b) seemed to wick away too much water from the soil in the pods. I had a good germination rate, but white fungus was a real problem. I have transplanted my seedlings to plastic drainable pods. I hope they survive the process. Time is money and there aren't many do-overs with a product like this.
