On the other hand, I found just a few elements of the plot far-fetched. The very fact that a young man, supposedly schooled in firearms and with his father and others present, forbidding him to do so, would fire a weapon found in suspicious circumstances--well, that seemed at best very unlikely. Ditto the new homeowners, unknown to their neighbors, going door to door to apologize for the shooting in the neighborhood, thereby gaining valuable clues from the neighbors with whom they spoke; it just seemed so unlikely to me. As a neighbor in similar circumstances, I would be unlikely to even open my door to these people, much less engage in conversation with them.
So, as I say, a novel to which I react schizophrenically. Since I read for relaxation and entertainment, and prefer amusing, light stories, I found the frequent misunderstandings and quarrels between the main characters--part and parcel of their being well-developed and complex entities--unpleasant, although realistic. I also found the sadness of parts of the book totally unappealing But I can't deny the excellent writing and careful plot development, and I'm sure this book would have great appeal for readers who prefer a deeper and more complex reading experience.
The discovery of a hidden gun in the garden brings trouble in the progress toward both goals. Lyssa is still able to be rocked by anxiety and confusion but battles bravely to keep an even keel and solve the mystery of past events tainting the tranquility of her home. Kyle is ever understanding and supportive but some of Lyssa choices anger and terrify him.
The plot is fast moving as things develop quickly. Set in a small college town, PLANTED, includes an intriguing group of supporting characters with interactions that are realistic and sometimes amusing.
The Penningtons need both their professional and personal skills, as Lyssa and Kyle take on all challenges and with love, honesty and surprising inner strength and come out even stronger.
This is the first in what promises to be terrific series.
