This headset, the Explorer 50, is the true successor to the M50. It has all the same qualities that made the M50 famous, including a good price and so comfortable to wear that you'll probably forget it's still in your ear. It even has a very useful new feature: Hold the volume button for 2 seconds, and it will announce "Mute: On" to indicate your mic is muted. Hold it again for 2 seconds, you'll hear "Mute: Off". Perfect.
So for all of you who are looking for a worthy replacement of the Plantronics M50: The Explorer 50 is it. I have both. They are virtually identical, the Explorer 50 has the mute function, and the call accept button is a little smaller and harder to press by accident, which is probably a good thing. The M50 used to redial once in a while when squeezed in my pocket after I forgot to turn it off, I think this is less likely to happen with the Explorer 50.
So thank you, Plantronics, for continuing this proven design with just some minimal tweaks (smaller call button, mute function). If it aint broke, don't fix it. I hope this headset will be available for a long time to come, maybe I'll buy another one just as a spare.
Pro's- (1)-Very light at 10 grams vs. 11 grams for the M50, so comfortable that you don't know it's there, and easily wearable all day.
(2)-The microphone doesn't kill background noise but unlike the M50 it doesn't ("AMPLIFY") the background noise, so it's balanced & way better than the M50.
(3)-Speaker sound, (not volume) is cleaner and better balanced than the M50.
(4)-Distance and Range are about the same at roughly 30 feet away from your phone, and for me it's still crystal clear 1 or 2 more feet before it starts breaking up and cutting off the sound.
(5)- A MUTE function which the M50 doesn't have and there's countless reasons to use a mute function, which I personally think ALL Bluetooth headsets should have by default.
(6)-This for me is PRICE and Quality for that price and at 29.99 it's definitely here.
Cons- (1)- It weighs less than the M50 by 1 gram, because the front face of the E50 is a lighter weight cheaper feeling plastic, but the back of the headset is of the same quality.
(2)- The Volume loudness is noticeably lower than the M50 at FIRST, but after using it for about almost a week, it improved DRAMATICALLY over putting it on the first time & having cycled through those low volume levels, so I would put it close to (after speaker break in), but not quite the same volume as the M50, but it does have slightly better clarity for conversations, except the ringer volume as well as voice prompts are noticeably weaker than the M50, but not enough of a big deal.
(3)- Style, as far as style the M50 wins hands down for me over the E50, I just like the contrasting blue and black as well as the more modern & sturdy front faceplate compared to the cheaper plain black hexagonal lined front faceplate of the newer E50.
As you probably can tell from my review, other than style, I think the E50 is a more improved model where it counts, (way less) background noise, mute function, (slightly) clearer sound, only slightly, but still clearer just the same, and as far as volume goes, it does improve drastically over the first time you initially used it, I emphasize this because it was almost a deal breaker for me, so my recommendation is to give it a week of use for the speaker to break in and cycle that volume button, it will really improve & change and get ALOT better.
Now, the rubber earpiece is identical to the old style, but if you squeeze the top part, it is hard, from the larger speaker filling the space. The older model was soft, allowing a secure fit in your ear. And no pain.
You KNOW I wanted to love this headset...I’m invested. And very, very disappointed.
If there is anything I don't like, it's the series of tones it plays when it starts up, which I find slightly too high pitched. It also plays a message when it starts up that tells you it's connected, how charged the battery is, and how much talk time remains. That message is too long. Sometimes I'm turning it on while I'm already on a call, and it connects first, then plays the message, so the message is playing over the person who's talking and I can't hear the caller. But it's a minor detail and I still love the headset.
