Julia finds a way to rediscover herself and live life while working on her bucket list. All is well until one of the guys finds her on the island. Can she look past his mistakes for a chance at true happiness?
Alisa has woven together a tale that questions everything Jules has ever believed about herself, a love triangle and a HEA that keeps the reader guessing until the end. Plastic Confidence is the first in a new series and I can't wait to meet these characters again in the next one!
Meet Julia Delaney, a.k.a Jules, the lead singer of Love Sick Ponies, sex superstar, and a heart full of rocks. She loves them and leaves them, a bad girl through and through.
That is until she meets Brennan Curtis, a fan boy, a wannabe friend, and the only one who can possibly tear Jules’ walls down.
When the plastic snaps wide open, Jules finds herself in a vulnerable and awkward situation with Brennan and her band."
I really don't even know how to start this review...the above book description taken from Amazon doesn't even begin to describe how complex and emotional this book was for me but I will definitely try.
This was my first Alisa Mullen book and honestly, I really wasn't expecting it to be what it was... there was a freaking Ouija board that plays a big part in the story, a rock band and the coming of age of three 12 year old girls...so I was just thinking it would be some NA fantasy with elements of the supernatural in there. I was SO wrong and although much of this book actually left me gutted (my heart and stomach actually ached reading it) I wanted to start it all over again the minute I was done...NO lie and I'll tell you why.
I completely identified with the heroine of the story...Julia was me at 12, me at 18, me at 29 (minus the rockstar part) and even though it was at times painful to read what was happening to this girl who loses her innocence way too fast, it made me feel something I haven't for a long time...calm relief and a sense of not being alone in my misery. Sure it was a fictional book, but the spiritual/supernatural foreshadowing aspects has happened to many people (nobody ever addresses it for fear of being laughed at) and the emotional journey she goes on of self-discovery and letting go of the stereotype she has been forced into was just mind-blowing and beautiful to me.
When Julia meets the man of her dreams only to lose him over and over again, and then faces all her demons head on to deal with the harsh cards life has dealt her, I just wanted to scream in agony and then shout for joy as she grows from a weak and emotionally battered girl to a strong and emotionally stable woman who might finally have what she deserves (in all the best ways).
This book was powerful, at times funny and very sexy, but most of all a really engaging tale of family, life, love and putting the negativity of a traumatic past away to make room for the endless possibilities of a brighter future.
One of my favorite reads so far this year!
