many rave about this movie. It appeared to me to be a second rate war movie.

Not very close to reality of the Vietnam war. I spent a year in Nam as a Platoon Sergeant with 1/26 Marines (Hills 881, 861, Khe Sanh). We had no drugs or MJ. I was in the bush for about 8 months before I even drank a friggin warm beer. The only military people who may have been on drugs were in the rear areas handing out tennis rackets at the officer's club.

Not sure if average Americans will understand why we lost the war after watching this movie

How brave Skyrunner is in his review, so much so that I question most of what is said.

Watching this again for the first time after all these years. I am going to write here what few others have had the courage to say. This movie has a great cast, one of the best casts in all of film history to compete against the likes of The Outsiders. But it still doesn't save it from being an absolutely terrible film. 8.1 on IMDB is such an egregious error. I would rank it about 3.9/10. It is so obviously filmed in California, or somewhere where there is cumulus clouds and oak trees. The lighting is all wrong. The script is deplorable every time an actor opens their mouth. The poor guys are screaming for guidance and clearly getting none. The drug scene was wanting and uninspired. I knew this was a terrible film when I was younger but didn't then have enough life experience or film vocabulary to understand. I just knew that everybody said it was great -- some kind of classic or something. Watch it again, here, for free, with open eyes and you'll see what I mean. Platoon is a paradox of the film world. It has the greatest cast while being one of the worst movies I have seen. Not a moment of it is above B-movie grade.

On one hand this movie it is a masterful, creative work of art--a beautifully filmed, superbly acted, and skillfully directed film. On the other hand, it is a historical piece of garbage and a slap in the face to every vet who ever served honorably in Vietnam, including me. But unfortunately, as has been noted in film before, particularly in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance," when the myth becomes larger than the truth, people tend to print the myth. Here Stone has succeeded in printing a myth that fits his warped sense of patriotism, or lack of patriotism, and he uses this myth to heap revenge on his country and his fellow veterans for some perceived harm done to him. I suspect it is harm done to him by someone else that he has projected onto his country and its veterans, but that may be my trained counselor side speaking. So for me, this movie is more about a disturbed man with an ax to grind than it is about an artist with a story to tell.

I just took the plastic part of the DVD off last night. (I already have the film on VHS). The bottom left part of the DVD case broke right away. I don't think this should happen when I paid that much for the special edition. It should have a nice paper cover over the plastic cover, and the plastic cover should be of higher quality. Also, if it was packaged in something to protect it better maybe this would not have happened, but I don't know if that is why it happened.
