A flashback to the late 60's, a snapshot of a year of some soldiers' Vietnam experience. Showed some raw parts of the war without detailing why things were done. For instance, there were 2 'friendly fire' deaths. There were soldiers messed up on drugs. There were other soldiers shown mistreating non-combatant Vietnamese. You are left to draw your own conclusionsas to why. This is an accurate portrayal because the characters are well developed, there is a general 'fog' about the whole war felt by these soldiers as they individually find ways to cope, and decide how far they will morally decend.

This is a classic movie. Watching it for the first time in about ten years it did seem a little more primitive than what I remembered, but if you think about when this came out, it should put things into context in terms of what it achieved.

I won't review the movie since you can do that anywhere.
But as far as the Blu Ray, it's good but a little disappointing.
The video is great in my opinion. A little bit of noise here and there but I expect that, especially for a movie from 1986. Some people say they cleaned up the video a little too much, I don't think so.

Sound is the big issue. The track sounds good, the background sound is pretty good. The gun sounds are a bit weak. They don't sound right. Nothing terrible, but just slightly off. The biggest problem is the conversations. For the most part it's not bad but it seems like when it rains and people talk, it sounds like static. It's strange. Also, most of the conversations sound flat and if they whisper, you're not going to hear it. It would of been nice if they focused on it a bit more.

Would I buy it again? Yeah. Even with the sound issues, it's fine to listen to, just something you have to deal with.

I recommend this blu-ray to anyone who wants to see a great movie and probably the second best war movie ever, behind Apocalypse Now. Of course that's all my opinion.

Five stars for the movie itself, no flaws noted in the blu ray transfer. -1 star for the flimsiest blu ray packaging I've seen to date: paper-thin plastic, cracked in multiple places during packaging or shipment (the other blu ray disc shipped along with it was undamaged, so perhaps the Platoon case was damaged before the shipment was assembled), no rigidity at all in the walls of the case itself. I didn't return it since the disc itself was undamaged and played fine, and ordered some better quality empty blu ray cases to replace damaged ones, and exchanging this item due to damaged poor quality case would likely just result in the replacement having the same case issues.

Platoon, everyone knows by now. It's been years since I've seen it. They edited one part that I can see. When Junior gets bayoneted. They cut part of it. I guess it was too real for some pansy editor... As for Windtalkers. I see why single DVDs of it can be had for about 35 cents. It's mainly totally unbelievable battle scenes. I don't feel it does the real Code Talkers justice @all. You get it for what Platoon would cost alone, pretty much, though.

Well written and acted. However, in the seminal scene of Sgt, Elias being killed by the North Vietnamese...the special effect charges...that are supposed to explode on his vest...do not. I heard Oliver Stone felt that it was too perfect to re-shoot. Wrong...Mr. Stone you should have re-shot that scene.

I'm not a Vietnam vet but have read much about the tragic conflict. I believe this film portrays a realistic look into the gritty experiences of the Grunts on the Ground.
