Flash forward 2 months. The bag was clean empty and dry and I went to use it for a local hike (Hawk Mountain PA). I filled the bad with water, everything good. Again, fit it into my same LL Bean pack. Still good. About 5 minutes later I bring my gear out to my truck and I feel drips running down my leg... Uh Oh...
I open the pack and slide the Platypus bag out - it clearly developed a small burst at the seam and filled the bottom of my pack up with water... Nice. Towels, dump out the water and now have to lug 3 big water bottles instead on the hike.
I don't usually trash products, but c'mon Platypus a freakin seam burst??? LAME. Don't buy this bag, it's a POS.
I already used the Platy soft bottles for other things but using this for the complete hydration system is a no-brainier. I cannot stress enough how sensitive i am to the chemical taste, with this, there simply is none! not a little, not just a barely noticeable amount... NONE! when you're done you just roll it up and it weighs close to nothing as well.
Only down side is that without baffles it will turn into a cylinder when completely full, so watch out for that for comfort sake, or just fill it less. I still recommend it whole heartedly.
Not pictured is a clip on the hose to clip onto your backpack strap or onto your clothes, whatever you prefer. It's a fairly solid clip, did not slide around at all during the event I was participating in.
Filling it up was a lot easier than I had anticipated, in light of all the reviews. I used a brita filter into a water pitcher, and held the platypus by the bottle/reinforced opening to pour in the water. Just hold everything in the air over the sink and pour carefully- you won't spill if you're careful and can avoid the platypus escaping due to slickness of grip. (yeah yeah)
The hose screws on securely with no leaks, even at full capacity smashed into my pack.
I gave the item a quick pre-rinse prior to use, and noticed a slightly sweetish tang to the water while I drank it. It's much better than other highly rubberized tastes, and if the water had been cold I wouldn't have noticed the flavor at all. I'm fairly sure this will fade out over time.
I took away a star due to the item being a hassle to refill; you have to remove the entire bladder in order to refill it. Also, it takes a while to dry out the inside, and the hose will always have water (If you fling it around your head in an open area it'll force the water out due to centrifugal forces, but you'll look silly in the process.) Read some other reviews for better upkeep ideas, as I've just use this item once, however my experience has been overall positive.
