So it's very much a character driven book and if you don't fall in love with Will and Charlie you won't like this book. Will is gently, believably flamboyant. He's pretty. He's a sweet guy. He's also strong, resilient and nobody's fool. His sister describes him as a wandering parakeet and that sums up the surface but he's much more than that. He's thoughtful and steady under all the camp mannerisms and film obsession. Charlie is annoyingly clueless more than half the time but somehow you don't mind, even find it charming, because he's so besotted by Will he just can't think straight. Thinks Will is the sun and the moon and just can't believe beautiful Will would ever want him And it's just so sweet. You really want these guys together. The way the author conveys the pent up passion they have for each other, not just sexual, though there's that off the charts, but the yearning they have for each other is moving. They both think they won the lottery but they just can't figure out how to communicate. And not being able to express such deep feelings is frustrating which can make for a frustrating read if there isn't a dramatic tension, a pay off. For me, Will and Charlie, and the chemistry, both sexual and emotional that binds them, is that pay off. Did I already mention I LOVE this book?
I'm so glad I went with my gut instinct and bought the book. All the reviews I read were correct - it isn't an easy read. Even paying attention it was often necessary to go back and re-read certain bits to keep track of who was speaking etc.
It's a character-driven novel and R. Cooper made both of her characters unique and flawed and interesting enough in the developmental arc to keep me intrigued and wanting to know more.
If you like a book with characters that have depth and flaws that are brought out of their comfort zone and are rewarded for their courage in stepping out on a limb, then give this book a go - it truly is a beautiful story.
