Universal solutions to an even more universal problem

I watched Charlie struggle through years of his anxiety. Some of his unease and panic was visible, while much of it lurked under the surface. It's a hard thing to watch, but seeing him come out from under it as he learned what worked and what helped was a beautiful thing. He was relentless in his self-experimentation and curiosity, which paid off as he discovered nonconventional and oft-overlooked solutions to his anxiety.

This book is an honest look at the issues that plague most people and the simple habits, hacks and cures that can patch up those cracks and smooth those potholes. This stuff works. "Play" works. I've brought a smile to a thousand adults in a park or a playground and watched their fears and problems melt away-- a lesson we'd all do well to carry into our everyday life.

Play it Away isn't just about tapping into child-like joy and curing anxiety; it's about optimizing your body and mind for peak performance and becoming a more efficient, happier person, and learning how to be a better friend to yourself and others. It's about relearning those simplistic means of dealing with stress and being reminded what it's like to truly connect with someone without pretense or agenda. But mostly, it's what happens when you give into what comes naturally-- or what used to come naturally-- and the life changing good that's sure to follow.

Amazed how easily my anxiety vanished

I was a long-time anxiety sufferer and I'm in my early 20s. I should be more relaxed than ever at this age! But I was living in anxiety about everything-you name it: school, work, family's health, social life, love life, I was not a normal carefree college kid. I would search methods of calming anxiety through food, meditation, and mostly books. I was able to comprehend advanced psychological solutions but I felt it was only exacerbating and exaggerating my condition more. When I came across this book and saw its main focus was "play" I thought it wasn't for me. Unlike Charlie Hoehn, I am not workaholic, quite opposite, I was an avoider. I certainly cared about my courses, so much that the anxiety of failing lead me to procrastination, avoidance, and when I did study- I was too foggy to absorb the heavy material. And I actually thought I was "playing" but I realized my "play" was not healthy leisure and only worsened my condition. I would waste precious time on social media, reading blogs, watching videos, and surf sites or when I did go out with a friend- it was drinking coffee and talking about the negatives and stressors of our lives.

Within the first week, my anxiety decreased by a good 60%. I realized much of my anxiety was actually very superficial and unnecessary, and how so much of it was easily deletable through these very simple methods! Before I knew it, my anxiety was gone, and I found myself valuing and enjoying my playtime and feeling more productive with my tasks. It felt very natural too, this book is not a miraculous paranormal cure, its actually very simple knowledge that most of us anxiety sufferers would never consider prior. I could go on and on about how much I love this book. I highly recommend it for everyone, not only workaholics. It helped a great former unproductive person like me! (Which is in fact, a symptom of anxiety) You will not believe how easily your anxiety will vanish.

It is so great to hear about people having success while still playing. There are so many books and shows out there talking about how you have to work 80 hours a week and destroy yourself to be successful and this is the exact opposite of that.

I think most of us want to be successful, but if it means that I don't ever get to see my family and never get to enjoy any of the things I love then what is the point? Thank you Charlie for adding to my hope that you can be successful and still make time for good old fashioned play.

Solid read. Heard Charlie Hoehn's interview on a podcast (James Altucher's podcast, perhaps?). I was very interested in his message and narrative about his own life's burnout. As a young professional, I find myself in an anxious state and have been frantically been trying to ask myself if the entire race to monetary success is worth it.

Charlie's book helps provide perspective that life and work should not be all serious – it should be about play. Lots of tangible tips and perspectives to try out and think about here. Recommend for any individual who is hyper-anxious, career-focused, etc.

I received this book for free when I followed Charlie Hoehn's blog. It's written in that cheerful, motivational style, so it doesn't surprise me it has a review from Tony Robbins. It's basically a pep talk about throwing a ball around with the dudes when the going gets tough. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's pretty simplistic if you have a job, kids, etc. "Be kind to others, clean your house, turn off your electronics..." no exposes here.

As a 29-year old ambitious male, I saw many of the same traits Charlie shares in my own life. Although I do not suffer from anxiety, this book helped me recognize and take action with how I manage my friendships, hobbies, and approach towards work.

After reading this, I have newfound courage to act like a kid again. I now find myself asking friends to go to the batting cage or play one-on-one instead of happy hour. Thank you for the read, Charlie.
