I play the CD regularly in the car as my son and i drive around. I have basic French and have found that i understand more and more. We also read the book together. He's 3.5 yrs old and the other day he recognized the bath time section while listening in the car (we had read it without the CD a few days earlier). He likes the stories and requests particular ones when we read the book.
This program does not provide spaces for you to repeat dialogue, but i think it's great to "tune the ears" to the French language. I really like how it's separated into daily topics like waking up, eating breakfast, shopping at the super market, eating lunch, etc. Plus, it has some really fun topics like Winter with a melting snow man, and PIRATES! and taking the car to the mechanic.
The speakers voice is a bit bland but i got used to it. She speaks very clearly, but sometimes sings out of tune. Still, for the price, it is a fantastic amount of material. they packed all that onto one CD and the book is really good, too. (The book has the French on one side of the page and the English on the other. Just 2 columns per page. It's very clear which English applies to which French. Nicely done.)
I highly recommend this even for the beginner since i believe listening first makes learning that much quicker.
I love helping him learning conversationally/immersion style, and am so impressed with this book. For the 12$ I paid it is a FABULOUS value. Now that I have been using it I know it is worth a few times that. We've been making photo cards of some additional vocab, and incorporating French into our day. for example we've done breakfast time in French for three days now and already I feel comfortable with the conversation and my little one understands and responds (sometimes in French, sometimes in English). With the basic sentences and a few vocab words we've been able to prepare, serve, eat and discuss many types of breakfast foods and the related utensils, manners etc. And we're only up to page 9, there are 90 more pages!
I haven't used the CD too much, and I do wish it came with the songs on a separate CD instead of on MP3 files so we could use that aspect in the car without additional work/technology finagling on my part, but that is part of the low price I suppose. I do wish it had been a second CD for a few more bucks!
I do have a background of a few years French in highschool, and didn't believe I had retained much, but I really did retain some good stuff, including decent pronunciation. For that reason we haven't been using the CD conversations much, but they are helpful reminders and would be invaluable to someone with no French background.
I'd suggest getting some additional materials to truly immerse your child. We've gotten some CDs and some favorite books in French, and that has been a great addition, but this is my favorite resource so far.
Other than that, it is pretty easy to navigate and I like reading along. This helps me learn the language.
She enjoys playing this C.D, and some of the content (the way it's said) is humorous for children.
Some of the tracks do require you to "open the audio file", I'm assuming it's for use on the P.C
I tried it on my Mac, and it opened it iTunes, going to try it on Windows and see what happens there.
Great read along book with common phrases for parents as well.
