Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

The Kan is an ideal choice as an opening weapon against 1 e4, as it is one of the easiest variations of the Sicilian to learn and play. This is because, unlike some variations of the Sicilian, you don't need to memorize loads of opening theory in order to be successful. The Kan is relatively theory free in the traditional sense, and success is more likely to occur through the understanding of development systems and a deep study of the tactical and positional ideas for both sides.

In this book Johan Hellsten draws upon his vast experience in the Sicilian Kan, revealing his secrets and showing how Black can adopt this opening and play it with confidence. He provides the reader with a dependable repertoire, demonstrating what to do in the main lines as well as how to deal with White's tricky alternatives.

*Detailed coverage of an easy-to-play Sicilian

*Includes answers to all of White's main options

*Written by a renowned Kan expert

Johan Hellsten is a Grandmaster and a former Swedish Champion who has represented his country in numerous Olympiads and team tournaments. He has enjoyed many tournament successes and has won individual gold and bronze medals at the European Team Championships. He is currently employed as the chess teacher at the Universidad de Tarapacá in Arica, Chile. This is his first book for Everyman Chess.

His debut for everyman chess, the Scottish GM does a remarkable job. He explains everything with such prose that you will have such an immense understanding of the position. He makes this case in his intro, where he says that the Kan is not aas theoretical as the dragon, najdorf, ect. In fact, the Kan is the least theoretical Sicilian out of the whole Sicilian! And I couldn'y agree more, the Kan is so easy to play, the plans so clear, the positions so interesting, that it is starting to attract the attention of the super GM's. Another remarkable feature of the Kan is that it allows you to play from a sound positional basis. You won't have to keep up with the lastest move 30 developements in some sicilian lines (sveshnikov!)And best of all, it's risk free!

Again the author couldn't explain the positions any better... highly reccommended!

P.S. I was a die hard French addict, but due to some difficulties I was facing against prepared opponents, I decided to switch oppenings where I had clear explanations of the positions, I even had John Watson's Play the French, and while I won a lot of games with that book, I lost against prepared opponents due to lack of understanding of the key positions/lines. My success rate against 1. e4 has now skyrocketed.

Hellsten explains the Sicilian Kan in such depth that even highly rated players can learn from it. The book is organized around complete games, and although I usually prefer "variation trees" in my opening books, Hellsten makes it work. He annotates each game, covering all plausible moves by white and all of the possible transpositions. It is obvious throughout that he has played this for a while himself at the highest level. After working with this book, you will not just have memorized variations, you will understand the positions and plans.
This is his first book, and here is hoping Hellsten continues writing.

I have played the Kan for years and have read several books on it. I think this is the best work on this opening I have seen yet. It truly deepened my understanding and covered some emerging lines which have not been adequately covered in other books. However, as noted by another reviewer, the book is falling apart! I would give this book five stars except for this terrible flaw.
