By Cthulhu #1 HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER on February 25, 2014
We've had our PS4 since launch day (Knack, Killzone and Assassin's ordered separately, a bunch of downloads added as they appeared on the Plus) and we are very happy so far. As soon as we got it out of the box (pretty), we connected to our Wi-Fi, did a rather thorough tour of the system and took note of its capabilities (good stuff but some disappointments), checked out the new menu system (impressive), ran the mandatory update and did a quick round of Knack (fun). Many more rounds of Knack followed, especially by our 10 yr. old with occasional co-op help from me or one of her older brothers - yes, you can easily drop into a game and help out if you feel like it.

Given the DualShock 4's rather short life on a charge, getting a bundle with a second controller makes a lot of sense. Or just order one separately because, even if you are a lone player you will almost certainly miss a standby, charge controller if you don't have one.

So, without regurgitating published specs... let's talk about what we're getting.

Here they are, first briefly, then discussed below. Still under 'first impressions' so I may add or remove some as we keep playing, learning and exploring.

- Awesome, flawless graphics. Day one games are just that, probably not taking full advantage of the system but Knack hints at what's possible.
- Near-revolutionary new DualShock 4 controller.
- 10x the processing power of a PS3 and it shows.
- 32x more RAM
- Games on physical disks can be borrowed, traded
- Digital content made available at whatever PS4 you log into
- HDD still upgradeable without voiding warranty - our 1TB 7200 RPM upgrade should arrive later today.

Seeing that the majority of reviews here are thanking Amazon for making the PS4 available for sale right before launch, and not actually reviewing the PS4, I decided that a review of the system should be posted up for those that are looking for real reviews.

I was one of the lucky ones who got a PS4 a few days earlier because of the Taco Bell promo, so I've had a few days prior to launch to mess around with it. I was able to get a copy of COD Ghosts, so please take that into account when I discuss the PS4 graphical capabilities. Also, I could not play online yet so I won't be talking about online gaming in this review.

The PS4 is Sony's 4th generation console, and they've been successful in every generation since their first. I think you're going to see history repeat itself with the PS4 launch...... off to a slow start, but by the end of the generation it will be on top. With a fairly weak lineup, there was honestly not much I was excited about, besides the fact that it's Sony's new console in 7 years. Hooking up the device is a breeze, you just plug the power cable (no power brick required!) into the PS4 and into the wall, and the HDMI (included) from the PS4 to your TV or receiver, and you're set to go. First thing I did was pop in COD Ghosts, installed it onto the HDD, and started playing the campaign mode. I have this game for the 360, and comparing the graphics to the PS4, it was only marginally better. The game looks very pretty, don't get me wrong, but it just isn't that big of a jump in graphical power from last generation to this generation (nothing like how when the Sega Dreamcast first came out and blew everything out of the water). Now for the game play itself...... there was some lag during some of the more intense parts of the game.

*** Key: ✔ Positive ✖ Negative ⓘ Informational/Neutral ***

Gamers rejoiced last fall as we were introduced to two brand new gaming experiences with the PS4 and Xbox One. I want to share my perspective as someone who purchased both at launch. In my review, I tried to focus primarily on the PS4 as it stands on its own. However, examining the console in a vacuum means losing out on important insights (especially for someone trying to decide between the two consoles), so you'll notice some comparisons sprinkled in here and there. I hope you enjoy! Please comment with any questions - I'll be happy to answer them.

-- Design --
ⓘ Dimensions (cm): 30.5 x 27.5 x 5.3 (similar to PS3 slim)
ⓘ Dimensions (in): 12 x 10.8 x 2
✔ Sleek and modern, this powerful parallelogram looks good in your entertainment setup (especially when compared to the more clunky Xbox One)
✔ Can stand vertically or lay horizontally

-- Performance --
ⓘ Runs off X86 AMD Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) – basically, a single chip that handles both processing (CPU) and graphics (GPU)
✔ 8-core CPU means that multitasking is a breeze (which is key for quickly switching between games, apps, and menus)
✔ GPU comes in approximately 50% more powerful than Xbox One, which is why we’re seeing several cross-platform games (Call of Duty, Watch Dogs, etc.) running at better resolution on PS4. However, it takes a trained eye to notice the difference… Most people won’t catch it without a side-by-side comparison.
✔ Console runs fairly quiet… I would say about as loud as the Xbox One

-- Storage --
✖ The hard drive fills up fast. Remember, there is an installation involved with every game, even when you buy the physical disk.
