Due to the fact that a console is more of a long term investment and the fact that Sony IMO did well during the PS3 era (I own a PS3, Xbox 360 and the Wii for that generation) decided to be a early adopter and do a day one purchase. Seen some issues hit the net stating the PS4s are bricking but you know.. you always think you're not gonna be part of the statistic. Well its happened, I'm part of the ".4%" that Sony called out with broken machines.
From all the other owners of a PS4 it'll be about a five week turn around at the least if you send it to Sony for a warranty repair system. I've decided to just go and contact Amazon and get a full refund on it. To dang bad as I was looking forward to playing Killzone and ResoGun.
I guess the glass half full is that this issue is right at the start of my journey and not near in the middle like a RRoD.
UPDATE review with four stars 11/17/2013
Got it working. It seems as Sony has some shoddy workmanship around this time around. After looking thoroughly at the machine since I really want to take in the next generation machine and how small it was, I noticed near the HDMI Port it wasn't properly seated. Took a tweezerman tweezers and flicked the HDMI port into its rightful place. And tada the system is alive! Updated through the internet to 1.5 and the little black box is running like it should!
Few notes that I would like to go on about, the system is tiny. You can have it pretty much anywhere in your entertainment system and it wont take up that much of a footprint. Its slightly bigger than the original Wii. Its angular design aesthetics is also a bit cool. Kind of harking back to the days of the PS2 with all the cuts and such but this time around its all angled out..
Which brings me to the other side:
I hate the capacitive touch button on the machine. I hated them on the PS3, I hate them on the Xbox 360S and I hate them on the PS4. You don't get a real tactile feedback and when you need to turn the machine off with that button its just annoying. And you will have to use that button if you want to get into safe mode on the dang thing.
It feels cheap. The plastic doesn't feel great. While I have to admit my 80GB PS3 looks fancier it felt cheap too, and this one feels just as cheap. However you won't have to worry about it since you'll only touch it what? Once or twice. If you move around a lot I guess you'll notice how cheap the system feels all the time. Either ways I know most people will set it and that will be that.
Its stupid angle design is a conish factor. The infamous wobble is true. They stuck a rubber feet where the matte side is divided from the glossy side so if you play with it you can wobble it. Another thing to note is you need a slim USB connection if you're ever gonna use a USB product. Because of the angles and how deep the ports are recessed it wouldn't take my Corsair Voyager drive. Also to note the slot loading BR Drive is a bit annoying too. And again because of the angled design the plugs in the back is a bit of a pain in the ass.
The system gets hot. AMD CPU and GPUs on the PC generally run hotter than Intel and nVidia products so that was expected. Hell even the Trinity APU I have running on my HTPC can get hotter than my 3930K stock for stock. So it was expected by me for the console to heat up. I've noticed however how the system is able to push out so much of the heat though the back vents, its very impressive for its size and build.
The new light system on the console is confusing... When you turn it on the PS4 goes from STANDBY ORANGE to TURNED ONE BLUE, once its on and does all the posting and what not the light will turn WHITE, when you turn off the machine the light will still be WHITE, and than go ORANGE to let you know its in standby. When fully turning it off tho I've noticed it goes from WHITE to BLUE and then off.
All in all I don't need to list any of the pros since all of you readers have probably seen them, but this is to tell you the worst of the worst of the PS4.
Oh and yeah, Amazon shipping is crap. It was in a box at the bottom with no foam/air whatever. All the air bags where on top, which means the damn thing wasn't protected on one side. Seriously disappointed in Amazon packaging.
Well its finally here, the Playstation 4! Like many of you, I pre-ordered mine back when this console was released at E3. I purchased the PS4 Killzone bundle through Amazon. Now let me start off by stating that I play everything. I have a 360, PS3, Wii, I have an XBOX1 on order, I have it all dating back from the Sega, so you wont find any biased review here. Im a fan of it all.
First and foremost, let me begin by saying that I did receive my package through UPS on the launch day around 4:30pm. The packaging itself wasn't to great with ripped tape and bubble wrap bulging out of the box, however, there was nothing broken or missing. I was able to follow the tracking progress all the way up to its delivery through Amazon, so I knew where my package was located at all times.
The PS4:
Your PS4 will come in an almost brief case-like box, complete with a handle and all. After removing the official PS4 sticker and opening it, we get a look at the goods! Inside, you receive the console, one controller, an hdmi cable, an ac power cable, a headset, a usb > controller cable, and a quick start setup guide, and a booklet with codes to redeem: a 30 Day trial of PSN, 30 day trial of Music Unlimited, and $10.00 to spend in the PSN store!
The console: The console itself is pretty slick, just like the pictures show. You have two buttons(power and eject) located on the front of the console. Its a little bigger than I anticipated, however, I wasn't necessarily looking at the size specifications during the time I pre-ordered it. There are 2 USB ports located on the front of the console, as well as all your typical inputs/outputs on the back of your console for video and audio. Gone are the days of your R/W/Y visual and audio cables! An HD TV is required. The HDMI cable provided in the bundle is sufficient enough. Its long enough to get the job done, and I havent experienced and HDMI issues like many people are reporting. (Playstation indicated that .4% of its console had hardware issues regarding the HDMI and it not displaying video output). After hooking everything up, you will follow some steps to set up an account or sync your PSN account. Afterwards, a 350MB Day 1 download is required to get everything up and running on your PS4.
The controller: This is by far the best/ most comfortable controller out of all the PS systems. Its a bit lager then your PS2/PS3 Dualshock controllers. Complete with a touchpad sensor, and a built in speaker, this is a beautiful, slick version of the controller many of us know. The classic Start and Options button also got a little m,makeover...instead you have a Share button which allows you to take screenshots and record videos at anytime, located to the left hand side of the touch pad. On the right hand side of the touch pad, you have the Options button. This essentially acts as the start/options menu when you're in a game, or need assistance. Overall, getting a grip on the new controller didnt take to long to adjust to.
The headset: The headset isn't much of a headset at all.... Its a little 1-piece wired earbud. I wasn't too impressed with this, and I plan on turning to someone else for a better piece of equipment. However, its still better than nothing, and for the time being, it'll do just fine.
PSN: This is a section will need to be updated at a later time for an efficient review. During the entire launch day, a message was displayed on the dashboard that "PSN is currently undergoing maintenance". I was still able to download the games that were offered for free, and I had no connection issues downloading anything. The PSN Store was accessable, as were all the digital downloads and add-ons. I did not participate in any multilayer games, so I cannot review on that aspect.
Overall, I am extremely satisfied with this product. The games look beautiful (Im talking to you Killzone) and its an incredible piece of hardware. The pre-order and wait were well worth it. If you're familiar with the PS3 interface, it runs very similarly. Amazon emailed me all of my codes associated with the bundle I purchased, so BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR EMAIL if you are purchasing a bundle that includes downloadable contend or a PSN subscription. Overall, Ill give the PS4 4 out of 5 stars! I'm really enjoying it, and I'm looking forward to the next generation of gaming!
****Ill attempt to update this as I play along*****
