Good sound and build. Bad fabric cover.

Good sound and build. Bad fabric cover.
Let me start out by saying that the headset did come in mint condition/Brand new. It is easy to pair to any PlayStation console. Just plug the USB and turn on the headset, and you are good to go. The sound on this audio device is nothing overly special. It has good mds, descent highs and ok bass. It gets the job done, however. For gaming it is quite perfect as I can appreciate pretty much every sound a game has to offer. It helps that it is, of course, compatible with the headset app on the PS4, but the sound presets are not vastly different from each other in my honest opinion. The built-in mic is not good at all. It sounds muffled and tinny. But for me, it’s not a deal breaker because i don’t do group chats at all on PS4. The quality of the construction of this headset is were things start to falter. ergonomically speaking, it is a well built device. It doesn’t put a lot of pressure on my head and it is comfortable to wear. The ear cups have enough padding so that my ears don’t scrape against the drivers. However, they did start to slightly deform over time; translating into less padding and more discomfort because of that. At least that has been my case because the headset felt great at first and now the ear cups bother me after an hour and a half of playtime.. The fabric on the headset is soft and feels premium at first. Overtime, though, it does start to show its cheapness. I take good care of this headset and am very mindful were i place it and around what i place it. Nonetheless, it is still subject to environmental damage. My guess is that moisture is not its best friend. The padding on the ear cups and the bands began to peal off after a while. The only thing I can think of that has damaged the fabric is moisture because i do sweat a lot around the ears and i have, in many occasions, worn the headset with my hair slightly wet or with hair gel. Overall, the headset is worth the price of entry. The surround sound does work quite nicely and it does immerse you more in any game that you play. It is comfortable to wear; even with glasses on. The downside is that the material covering the ear cups and band easily degrade over time. This unfortunately can equate to loss of comfort, especially around the ears. There are ear cups replacements for this model headset. They are hard to find but you can restore comfort to your ears. In summary. Buy for the price and what it provides. Be mindful of material degradation when exposed to moisture.

I'm an owner of multiple PS headsets going as far back as the PulseElite headset. A common issue with PlayStation Headsets has been the poor hinge or poor headband design. Anyone who had an elite will recognize the cracking of the decorative circular mounting point on the old headsets. The Pulse Gold users wll remember the plastic hinge that breaks after a bit of torque on the headset after a year or twos worth of usage. While I understand sony was trying for convenience to go with low cost. This resulted in a decent headset turning into a heap of disappointment. So I've ahd a good number of these headsets and different models and I have to say I'm happy sony has gone with this single hand band approach. The headset feels more sturdy, the cups feel like the gold models, and they are comfortable to wear. You could do worse for the price.

Long story short I think sony may have finally cracked the code on a console's stereo headset for online gaming that is comfortable, durable, and easy to use out of the box.

Onto the other aspects of the headset:
      1) Audio Quality: You could do a lot worse, but finding a good gaming headset with good audio will always be a problem. Booms are handled effectively enough, with adjust-ability on either the PS4 or PS3's headset app. Teammates on Overwatch, A Way Out, Battlefield 1, and other online games came through loud and clear.

      2) Mic Quality: I come in loud and clear so long as the audio quality of the games Voice is setup correctly. Mostly use it with the PS4's party chat functionality and I rarely have to repeat myself, even though I tend to be soft spoken and mumble a lot lol. So this is a blessing in its own right. Down side is that it can pick up what I'm munching on and on occasion the controller if you're sensitivity is too high.

      3) Battery: Gotten a good 8+ hours out of it. I usually leave it charging on a USB charging station.

      4) Buttons: good ol'sony quality buttons with well placed mute button for easy access.

It doesn't look, feel, or behave like cheap garbage. It looks like something an adult would use. If you're looking for something only an Audiophile would care about then skip this headset. If you need something that lets you be heard, lets you hear, provides reasonable 7.1 simulation, and won't break to quickly with regular use. Then splurge a little from the 50 dollar headsets and get this. Setup is easy, just plug in the dongle and go.

Final note 3.5mm wire is still included for those occasions the battery dies and you need to plug into the controller directly. This passive mode isn't as good as when it is powered on, but if you're gaming session lasts beyond the charge, you can easily fall back on this. Provided you don't lose the cable.

      Summary:
This headset is light, comfortable, sounds good, sounds clear, good microphone, and has a surprisingly good surround (7.1). I did a 2 hours comparison with my wired Astro MixAmp... and I was surprised with the results... I highly recommended it.

      About me:
I have been using flagship headphones for 7+ years for both music and gaming.

      About my headphones:
      Audeze LCD-2 (balanced) / Ultrasone Edition 8 LE / Beyerdynamic DT990 / AKG K702 / Creative Aurvana Live! / Astro Mixamp

      Review:
I did my testing with Destiny 2 for 2 hours, and by chatting with another audiophile friend using the party chat.

      - Microphone
The microphone sounds better than the earplug microphone that came with the PS4. Clearer and more natural sound.

      - Separation of sounds
I had no problem listening to different sounds coming from different places. There is a scene with refugees after the initial invasion, and I could hear all the different things happening (people crying, people coughing, sparks)

      - Sound quality
The sound was pretty good, sometimes I forgot I had the headsets on. I could hear the fire cracking, the explosions, shouting, rockets, etc.

      - Surround sound (7.1 VSS)
In headphones there is no such thing as 7.1 or 5.1 because that is physically impossible. However, there are algorithms such as Dolby Headphone, DTS Headphone:X or Virtual Surround Sound that use the 5.1 signals and transforms the sound in a way that fools our brain into thinking we are listening from a 360 degrees.

I tested the following 2 rigs:
      1) PS4 -> optical cable -> MixAmp Pro -> Creative Aurvana Live!
      2) PS4 -> new gold headsets with VSS enabled
      3) option 1) with dolby turned off
      4) option 2) with VSS turned off

I tested in 3-4 places by closing my eyes and rotating the character to check how good the positioning of the sound were. I could hear a difference in both the gold headset and mixamp with their respective surround algorithms disabled (that's good isn't it?)

Now, comparing the gold headset and the mixamp... I listened almost the same positioning... honestly, they were pretty close to call a winner... I would need to use a different headphone with a wider soundstage to probably notice a difference.

      Conclusion:
For me, is a pain to setup the cables and have cables everything every time I want to play. There is a beauty on just wearing the headset and that's it. Before getting this headset I considered Astro A50, HyperX Cloud II and SteelSeries Arctis 7 among others...

However, if you only care about having a good wireless 7.1 in your PS4 (and PS3), this headset is hard to beat.
I'm not saying they are better than the Astro A50 (I want to try them someday)... but for this price... is a really good deal.
