The reason I chose the Xbox One S for myself is I own a 4k TV, and the Xbox is 4k ready AND has a UHD Blu-Ray player. The PS4 iterations including the Pro do not have a UHD player, which is kind of baffling to me, as Sony pioneered that aspect with the PS3. Personally, I think they got a little cheap on these upgrades. Not to say they are not good, but come on Sony, what gives?
If you owned one of the previous PS4s, the Slim is noticeably smaller and quieter when downloading games or playing games from the hard drive. When playing games from a disc, the drive noise is about the same as the older PS4 (also about the same as the Xbox One drive noise). In terms of heat, the PS4 Slim is considerably cooler to the touch than either of the previous versions. On heat dissipation and quietness, the slim is by far the best PS4 to date.
The PS4 Slim also has some nice additions that the previous models do not. For one, the HDD is easier to replace in the slim. Simply remove a small l-shaped plastic strip from the back corner and you can access the drive. It takes a couple of minutes to replace the drive and update. Another nice touch is the see through light strip on the new PS4 Slim. I didn't think I would like this at all but after using the new controller it makes the once annoying light bar somewhat beneficial.
My biggest complaint with the PS4 Slim is the 500GB drive. It is not nearly big enough to handle today's games, and will fill up rapidly with games and updates. A minimum of 1 TB is required, so I don't know why Sony was so cheap here either. For comparable prices to the PS4 Slim and the PS4 Pro, you can get an Xbox One S with 1 - 2 TB of hard drive space, and they also come with a bundled game (PS4 Pro has no game bundle.)
On performance, the PS4 Slim is the same as all the other PS4s except the Pro version. They all play the same games and there is no difference in graphics, loading times, etc. The PS4 Pro does provide slightly faster loading times, but this is only noticeable if you had the original PS4. There are also slight improvements to graphics on non-4k displays with the PS4 Pro, but nothing earth shattering here.
Conclusion:
If you do not have a PS4 or a 4k TV, the PS4 Slim is a good way to jump into this console. It is the best version of the PS4 to date. If you already have a PS4, I do not feel that an upgrade to the Slim model makes that much of a difference. I personally would not spend the money to replace the original, as there really is not that much here other than the sleeker look.
If you have a 4K TV or are buying one soon, and you are a die hard PS fan, then look into the PS4 Pro, as there are many upgrades to take advantage of, and the graphics are amazing. However, as I mentioned earlier, The hard drives on the new PS4s are too small. The PS4 Pro only comes with 1TB of space and has no game bundle.
You can get an Xbox One S that is 4k ready with 1 - 2TB of space, a bundled game, improved ergonomic controller, and a UHD Blu-Ray player for the same price or less than the comparable PS4 models including the Pro. That is good marketing and great utility on the part of Microsoft.
Xbox One S made it very simple to choose the new system, even if you had the old one, because the overall improvement to utility and graphics carries over to every new console. When you buy a 4k TV the Xbox One S is ready to go. Sony only seems to have confused the issue and muddied the waters when it comes to selecting a PS4 system. Sony's updates feel more like a cash grab on a system that may soon run its course, while Xbox One seems to be extending the value, utility, and life of its console.
Don't get me wrong. I've been a PS guy for almost 2 decades, and I typically by Xbox at the end of the console's cycle. The PS4 is a great gaming system regardless of your version, but I just feel Xbox is doing a better job right now on utility and marketing.
At this time, these console wars kind of feel like the battles between Sega and Nintendo when they were at the top of the market. Everyone knows what happened to them. You have to give your customers real utility and real tangible improvements to keep them excited. So far I'd say Xbox is doing that. Sony...not so much.
We will see how this plays out when Microsoft releases the Scorpio in a year or two.
While it has been out for a while, I decided to get this as I have enjoyed my years with the Playstation 3 and figured for the low price point that it was worth it to get the next gen console as there are quite a few games that have come out that I wanted to play on the system now that it has matured a bit and the lineup has developed quite a bit over what was on offer during release.
With regards to the system itself, it is a snap to set up, and comes with all the cables and power cords that you need. Some systems out there don't come with everything right out of the box anymore, so you don't need to worry about needing to buy anything else to get started. I already had a Playstation network account, so I just input my information and everything was ready pretty much ready to go. Those without an account will need to do a little bit of setup, but it's not too difficult. After the system updates finished installing, I loaded up some games that I bought and downloads worked very well. You can play some games during the download process, so you can get up and running pretty quick if you go that route. The Playstation 4 works well with my HD television. The colors pop, the animations are smooth, and it's a pretty decent upgrade in every way from the Playstation 3. While it isn't as powerful as a newer computer that is specced for gaming, the performance and graphics work well for a console.
I like the new Playstation 4 interface a lot more than the Playstation 3 interface, which always seemed a bit barebones and slightly confusing at times. Accessing the things that I used most often just seemed to work more intuitively on the 4, and I spent less time in menus. Updates and notifications work more smoothly to let you know what's going on in my opinion.
Using the apps that come with the system works well also. If you have Netflix or something like that, you can run them through your Playstation just fine. The internet browser works, although using a control pad to type things out is slower than a keyboard. It is perfectly possible to use your Playstation 4 as a basic media center for your living room.
Uncharted 4 is a nice bonus with the system. This review isn't really about the game itself, but you get a disk copy in its own box.
The Playstation has a great catalogue of western and Japanese style games to pick from, so there is a pretty wide variety of things to get into. I've played things as varied as Modern shooters, JRPGs, sports games, adventure titles, and quite a few old school retro sytle games that I found on sale on the Playstation network. The system itself isn't region locked also. What this means is that you can play a game that is Japanese or European or whatever region in your American playstation, and vice versa. You can also set up multiple accounts in order to buy things from multiple "regional stores" on the Playstation network. This is a little more advanced than some users care about, but the options are there. If you find a cheap game in another country, it's no worry whether or not you can play it, or if another country's release has better content, you aren't out of luck.
All said, for the price point, the Playstation 4 is a great console that can provide countless hours of entertainment through games and media. It's currently the system that I use the most for gaming and media out of all my other options. While it is getting late in its life cycle, I'd still recommend it if you're looking for a great way to play games. You can't go wrong here.
