Editorial Reviews

Legendary saxophonist Branford Marsalis and his tight-knit working band invite audiences into their world of musical cohesion with the release of Four MFs Playin' Tunes. This is the first recording of the Branford Marsalis Quartet with an electrifying young drummer that joined the band three years ago. The results are a nimble and sparkling album, featuring ambitious original compositions by members of the band, a Thelonious Monk classic, and one standard dating to 1930. The record blends the beautiful and subtle ballad sounds of the 2004 release Eternal with the ecstatic contrasts of the critically-acclaimed Braggtown. In other words, this just might be the Branford Marsalis Quartet's most sublime musical achievement yet.

I feel happy when a hear tis album. Nice tunes, good musicians and the feeling that jazz, good jazz, not necessarily must be dark and complicate. This CD is fresh and excellent. Branford play more soprano saxophone and the new drummer is excellent. The rest of the musician are especially good. I don't know how explain, but this is less pretentious that the latest albums for Marsalis. Good direction. Jazz lovers need this kind of music. Good but easy, excellent ballads, and great themes also. A nice album to be happy listening perfect jazz. Thanks Branford.

There is no shortage of reviews on Amazon for this offering from Branford Marsalis so yes, there are people out there listening. And if you really are a jazz fan then you will like this. If you don't like jazz or you aren't sure then this music won't convert you. It's for jazz insiders and that is the way it is. Having said that it's pretty good jazz. The Monk tune "Teo" (which was memorably played by the Miles Davis Qunitet fetauring John Coltrane) is nicely reaaranged here and fits well into the new millenium. "Whiplash" is terrific and the standard "My Ideal" is in my respectful submission the best track on the album. OK I called it an album so that's showing my age....
I wish Branford would come out to Australia more often but the distance is a killer I suppose. Distance has no impact on what a good collection this is. Buy it and play it loud. If the neighbors come out shouting then you have done a good thing.

I keep waiting for something from this group that doesn't live up to the incredible string of great music which really began with Eternal, although really it was great long before that. But the collaboration of Branford and Joey Calderazzo continues to amaze me. I always want more soprano sax and that is certainly true here, but that is not so much a criticism but a preference since the only sopranos I look forward to are Branford ,James Carter and Dave Liebman. This is a bit brisker and a bit less in the ballad department but again that just makes it different than the last few efforts..It is every bit as good. Please keep it coming and come back to Maine.

I learned about "Four MFs Playin' Tunes" in a local newspaper review. I was always a big fan of the Marsalis family's music and Brandford was always my favorite even though Wynton is much more famous. I met Brandford back stage when he played at Stockton State College in New Jersey many years ago and he was just like plain folk. His quartet's Four MFs Playin' Tunes is now my favorite jazz album. I love every note from the beginning to the end. I never tire listening to it. Get it you will not be disappointed.

Branford Marsalis is still one of the best saxophone players around. He is a jazz man with a funky soul, R&B groove and can make finger popping music."Whiplash", my favorite song on the CD, is properly named. It will make your head bob and rock to a jazzy groove that is infectious. The other 3 Mf's are a wonderful compliment to their leader and I can't wait to see them play this one live.

Just listened to this album again after giving it a rest for too long. It is superb -- a wonderful way to greet the new year and a new day. It's impossible to rate one tune better than the next, but "My Ideal" gave my day a new lift. Thank you, Branford, and all four MFs for giving us this brilliant sound. Support these artists -- and enrich your life with their music.

Marsalis and the guys have been good for a while. I don't think this was a major project for them. Though every track is highly enjoyable and musical. Endymion, My Ideal and The Mighty Sword are my favs. If you like bands; you will like this.

I'm only half way through listening to this record, and I'm already telling you that it's great and worth picking up. Great sound, great playing, great tunes. This latest drummer is really a joy to listen to as well!
