So, yeah. From the above rant, you can kind of tell I liked the book (Maybe? Just a little? I thought so). I thoroughly enjoyed Playing Doctor. Beth Roberts is a lovely RN nurse who lost her husband four years ago. When her college bound son gets invited to be the photographer at a friend’s wedding, Beth comes along to assist and meets the very sexy Groomsmen, Gabriel North. These two hit it off like fire to a Molotov cocktail.
When the sparks begin between the two, they agree on a no strings, one night of passion. Neither one ever expected it would turn out to be much, much more. They open up to one another about their past marriages, the pain, the guilt, and connect on a deep emotional level. Oh my gosh. The heat between these two!! Hot, hot, hot. I also loved how much they brought out of one another, how they knew what the other was feeling.
One night is not enough for Gabe. He wants more. Beth is the first woman to make him feel, really feel, after his wife’s death. Beth is running scared. She doesn’t know how to deal with an emotional entanglement that might fail. She does that he could be the one to make her fall, and hard. Sigh. These two were hard headed, sexy, and oh so perfectly matched.
My only issue with this book is that it ended. I wanted more North. I wanted to see where their relationship would go so I was a little disappointed that there wasn’t as an epilogue with something a few months into the future. I’m really hoping for another book or short story with these characters because they were enjoyable to read.
Beth Roberts is a Nurse Administrator in the ER. She loves her job, but sometimes feels she is being buried in paperwork. Her best friend Connie, a fellow RN, is always trying to get her back into living her life, not just putting in time. Beth is a widow, her son a senior in high school looking at colleges and he is a very talented photographer. Her deceased husband, Jamie, was progressively more abusive after his last deployment in Afghanistan, and she's living with the scars and trauma. She tries not to focus on the relief she felt when he took his own life. Beth is joining her son as his assistant for a wedding he is photographing out of town. She has a hotel room, by herself, for a whole weekend, and plans to get a lot of work done. Connie challenges Beth to a sexy weekend with a tall dark and handsome stranger she can pick up for a no strings weekend. Beth is not convinced that's possible.
Gabriel North known as Gabe is a groomsman and the talk of the bridesmaids. He's tall, dark and luscious and Beth listens to their gossip while they are being photographed. He's an ER physician, widowed and since his wife's death a loner. They even hint he feels responsible. The wedding proceeds like clockwork until the grooms uncle, a middle aged man trying too hard to impress his very young partner, collapses. Gabe rushes to his side surprised at seeing the photographer's assistant, bending over the victim checking his pulse. He has been watching and admiring her every move around the room. Working together, they stabilize him until the EMT's arrive and take him to the hospital. They share a drink and get to know each other. Suddenly Beth hears Connie's challenge in her head. Why not?
What follows is a very sensual, brief but very sexy encounter where each of these wounded lovers unexpectedly open their hearts, both so in need of reassurance and forgiveness. I didn't want this book to end! Ms. Meredith has assured me that their more stories to tell. I can't wait.
I received this book from the author for an honest review.
I loved this story! I really enjoyed both the male and female characters. Beth is warm and friendly, a proud mother to her talented photographer son and a dedicated hospital employee. She works hard and is good at her job, but takes no time for her personal life. Gabe is similarly devoted to his job as an ER physician and has no plans to include a permanent female in his life. He's a steadfast and loyal friend, a handsome man who catches many a female eye. When he spots Beth at his friend's wedding, he is instantly attracted to her, and vice versa. The sexual chemistry between them is explosive and the love scenes are steamy and well written.
The overall tone of the story is lighthearted and fun, with a few emotional moments thrown into the mix to make the characters more believable and attractive to the reader. For a novella, the background and setting was well established and the plot was unique and enjoyable. I'll definitely be looking for more from this author! 5 steamy stars!
This author is one to watch. The writing is exact and clean, yet filled with beautiful descriptions and prose that make you feel you are right there in the book. Her characters are intriguing and colorful as they grow and move beyond their past hurts. The sex scenes (and there were plenty) sizzled with chemistry and nearly burnt up the page.
My only complaint ... it ended! It should have gone on for another few hundred pages. I want to continue to see this couple as they journey through their lives together. Give us more!
