Playing for Keeps is Kendall Ryan’s first foray into hockey romances, and she kicked this series off with a completely addictive hybrid romance that was a blend of the friends-to-lovers and best friend’s little sister tropes. I’m definitely a fan of Kendall Ryan’s writing, especially in her sassy, sexy, easy-reading contemporaries and romcoms. Playing for Keeps was brimming with heat and heart, and it had just enough angst to keep me on the edge of my seat.

Elise and Justin had the banter thing down born from a long friendship, and I couldn’t get enough of their witty, easy relationship. Elise has buried her long-held feelings for Justin, and he’s done the same, hiding them behind a playboy pro athlete persona. But Justin had reached the point in his life where he was looking for something more meaningful, something real, and he found that something in Elise. Once the chemistry between them started simmering, their attraction couldn’t be denied. The relationship build-up was seriously sweet, and I was rooting for this couple the whole way through. But they did have their challenges to overcome in the form of Elise’s big brother, Owen, as well as Justin’s relationship hang-ups. This couple had a solid foundation of friendship to fall back on, though, and because of that they were effortlessly playful, overwhelmingly passionate and so naturally paired.

Playing for Keeps was a fabulous start to an exciting and promising new hockey-themed sports romance series from Kendall Ryan. Full of heart-tugging emotion, Elise and Justin’s irresistibly sexy, forbidden romance pulled me in from page one, and I devoured it in a day. The plot was not original at all.

Justin: A jock who considers himself unlovable and incapable of loving someone else. He’s also dipped his stick into many holes. ;)

Elise: Justin's best friend’s little sister and strictly off-limits. Oh, and she is a virgin.

After a night of drinking, Elise and Justin have sex. They agreed to a FWB relationship with 3 basic rules. 1.) No falling in love. 2.) Any feelings other than friendship emerge and the horizontal fun times are over. 3.) Owen (Elise’s brother) can’t find out.

Justin dumps Else cause he has fallen for her and doesn’t think he’s good enough for her. He thinks he will eventually break her heart.

Elise tells Justin he is a good man. Boom, they are back together.

At first, Owen is upset about their relationship status but eventually embraces them as a couple.

See, nothing really new.

Justin is open and honest. I loved that about him. He did not hold back when it came to his attraction for Elise. Their relationship grew from no strings to so much more. The connection they shared was nothing they could walk away from. Justin delivers on the swoon and the romance. You will be totally smitten. The banter between them was filled with some laugh-out-loud moments.

A sweet and sexy story with great characters that had depth. You are going to love it!

I absolutely loved this book and didn’t want it to end. This is the first book in a new hockey series and if the next two books are anything like this one then this series is an absolute winner! Justin and Elise are childhood friends and to top it off Justin is best friend’s and teammate to Elise’s older brother, Owen. Which means Elise is on the Do Not Date list. Of course they are both attracted to each other and try to fight it especially after a one time drunken encounter which doesn’t turn out too great, well....
For as much as I love Justin and Elise, I also loved Owen, Becca, Teddy and Sara. All of them were a great group of friends and teammates and it was great to meet all of them in this book. Justin and Elise were perfect for each other and I was so happy that Justin realized his feelings off Elise was more than just sex and that he really loved having her as his friend too and missed that just as much when he would be away from her because of hockey.
I am so excited for the next two books in this series. I couldn’t put this one down and I know that will be the same with the next books.
