Playing For Keeps is the first Novella of Michelle Shriver's Men of the Ice Series and what a fantastic start it is. We get to meet Colton Tremblay NHL superstar and one of the biggest players in Montreal. His reputation has cost him not only in his personal life but now in his professional life as well with a trade to a new expansion team in San Antonio.
Then we get to meet up and coming sports reporter Maya Dominquez. She is a local reporter looking to move up to being a beat writer for The Generals.
When Colton appears at his first press conference and spots Maya amongst the other reporters he is instantly attracted to her and makes it a point to meet her. Maya knows of his reputation but feels the attraction to and takes the chance maybe to see who the real Colton really is.
There are definitely obstacles to overcome and chances to take but you are hoping is that they might find their HEA. If you love all things sports and romance this is one you won't want to miss.

There are so many things to love about this novella. First, I'm a huge Michele Shriver fan. Her transition into writing romances from women's fiction is a natural fit. In this novella, hockey takes center stage. Even if you're not a fan of hockey as I am, you'll love the two main characters, Maya and Colton as they both struggle with their careers and their growing attraction.

San Antonio serves as the setting and Ms. Shriver brings the reader into the Mexican culture that exists in the city of the Alamo. Food descriptions are as mouth watering as the hunk of a hockey star, Colton. Food serves as connection between the two as they find their way through the minefields of journalistic ethics and hockey fans.

I'm very pleased that Playing for Keeps is only the first in this series, Men on the Ice.

I liked Colton and Maya but there were a few story lines that really needed some more explanation. What happened with Colton and Jana? What about Maya and Shaun, there was a little more hate there than one comment to him seemed to account for. But, the story was sweet and I enjoyed it.

What's a girl to do when she's trying to be a professional and her latest assignment refuses to keep things on a professional footing? Well, not that Maya particularly want's Colton to keep his lips off hers, but this story of forbidden love does put her in an awkward position.

I really loved both the lead characters in this story. Maya is smart, driven, and wants to get to the top of a mostly male-dominated profession. However, seeing this sexy hockey player, she has a hard time remembering to ask her hard-hitting reporter questions, which has her in trouble with her boss until she comes up with a plan to spend more time with Colton all while making the manger or her newspaper happy. Colton may be seen as the "bad boy" from his old team, but he's actually quite sweet and a romantic at heart - it just seems like he lets the partying get the better of him. Now if he can just find a way to tame himself and capture the heart of Maya, he'll be set.

These two have great chemistry, and from their first meeting the reader can feel something special will happen. Colton certainly knows it too! A fun way to spend an afternoon and a great read! I really enjoyed this story and can't wait for more from this author! 5 stars!

I adored this book. It’s the first one in Michele’s new series and I cannot wait for more. The characters are well developed and the chemistry between Maya and Colton is amazing.

Maya has just landed a team reporter job assigned to the NHL expansion team, the San Antonio Generals. She wants to advance her career and will not let any distraction get in the way. Then Enter Colt Tremblay NHL superstar. He also happens to be the biggest player in all of Montreal. His reputation has cost him dearly, not just in his personal life but professional as well. He is traded to the Generals due to a scandalous event and at the first press conference meets Maya.

She is well aware of his reputation but there is a spark that she cannot ignore. Colt is used to getting what he wants makes a play. She takes a chance to see if there is more to him and there is. Under all the player is a sweet guy, who every intention of sweeping her off her feet. They have ups and downs but they take the chance on each other. Will they overcome these obstacles or will it break them? Read and find out. I cannot wait to see what Michele come out with next.

This is a novella introducing us to the San Antonio Generals hockey expansion team and their new captain and resident bad boy Colton Tremblay. Colton was not happy to get a call to tell him he had been traded from his beloved Montreal Canadiens, but decides that now is the time to get focused and try to improve the poor reputation that he had earned in recent times.

Maya Dominguez has had to fight tooth and nail for her job as a sports reporter and when she gets offered the beat with the newly formed Generals she can’t wait to make her mark.

All that changes when she meets captain Colton and the sparks fly, threatening both her career and reputation.

Only 4 stars for me, as I felt the end was a bit rushed and I think this would have been a 5 star read had it been a full size novel. That said, I can’t wait for the rest of the series!

I was given a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review. Reviewed by Diana.
