I wanted Paige to have love. True and genuine love. But I wasn't sure who was "right" for her. Do you choose loyalty and security? Or do you go out on a shaky limb and choose something and someone new? Like Kenneth told her, "No matter how hard you try to prove you are against the concept of love, you really long for it." And she CRAVED it. There are some heart wrenching and some heartwarming moments throughout. I enjoyed the family closeness and the friendships throughout as well. There were a few twists and turns, and I did not see that ending coming. Talk about a friend until the end. How far is too far? In the end, I was glad that Paige got the man who "seemed to adore her and a show her off" AND the man who "stopped to see her smile." Such great words Ms. Tia! Even for an old romantic like myself. That was Ahhh. :)
Ms Kelly does an excellent job bringing life to the characters . I loved Carlos sister ,mother .little Melody and the Wilkerson.
I'm glad Paige and Kenneth was able to make a go of their relationship instead of falling victim to lies and betrayal. If you have not read this novel buy the series you won't be disappointed. Because after the first novel I'm hooked
Life hasn't been easy for Paige. And Warren, her sperm donor, never stopped being a despicable human being. She's lucky, though, because she has a wonderful friend and protector in Carlos Ortiz. And herein lies the issue for me with this book: I loved Carlos. I really loved him.I loved his family, too, and the way that they embraced Paige and became the family that she so desperately wanted and needed. For these reasons, I could never really connect with Kenneth Wilkerson, or cheer for him and Paige to get together. He was a nice guy, he just...wasn't Carlos.
I was glad when the back and forth between Paige and Carlos was settled, and she decided that Kenneth was the one for her. I'm also glad that Carlos was good with that decision, and that he too realized that a romantic relationship between he and Paige just wasn't in the cards. I didn't want my man to be hurt too bad, lol.
Moving on to the next book in the series.
while i liked each character individually, i do think the chemistry wasn't there as much as i've seen it with kelly's other characters. it felt as if more time was spent on the backstory than there was allowing the love between paige and kenneth to flourish. then again, paige needed to sort through her issues before she should really understand and accept kenneth's love. i must say i really do like paige as a character, she has her issues, but she was so much more that a party girl trying to recover from her past and i was pleasantly surprised by that.
the constant flashbacks in the story are sometimes confusing, but eventually it all comes together. the transitions between the flashbacks and the present were not always as seamless as they could have been, but i think that will probably improve as kelly writes more. i think a few more pages would have helped do the characters and their love stories a little more justice. it didn't feel rushed or anything, i just didn't always feel well-flushed out or detailed enough if that makes sense.
overall, i enjoyed the book. i think i'll enjoy it more when i read it again because i'll know the storyline and will be able to pick up on the details a little more.
i'm hoping that my issues with the lack of chemistry are addressed in the other novels in this series. i really do like this group (especially carlos), so i'm hoping i can get into their heads a little more and see how they work through their issues with love.
