An impressive looking package from a distance, so if you simply want some shelf-candy to casually flip through - here it is - it's that and nothing more. Could have been much better if not for poor design (type lost to the gutters, blurry and pixelated images throughout) and missing content. Page 111 claims "here is a map of the Overworld" (for The Legend of Zelda) but I guess they forgot it, because it's nowhere in the book. An oversight indicative of this sloppy, slapdash compilation. A buy for only truly hardcore "have to have everything and anything that says Nintendo" collectors. I'll be returning mine. I'd rather have the shelf space for games.

At least the outside looks nice . . .

It sure looks nice at a glance, but is mostly a disappointing read. I was excited to crack Playing With Power open, anticipating fun tips, artwork, NES history, and retrospective details on the classic games covered within. Instead, this book contains a distracting mixture of quality and hardly any history or behind the scenes bits. The tips are mostly good, covering point values and strategies for maximizing your score in arcade ports like Donkey Kong, warps in platformers like Super Mario Bros. for speeding through the game, and recommend routes through open worlds like Metroid. The artwork varies throughout the book. Some scans from old Nintendo Power articles look decent, but then an image of a sprite on the same page looks dark and blurry, as though captured by taking a poorly zoomed photo of an image on a monitor. Perhaps worst of all is the editing. There are multiple typos and missing words. Take the description of the Legend of Zelda on page 61, "With a little and a lot of courage, you'll conquer your adversaries..." A little what? Luck? Skyworld in Kid Icarus is misidentified as "World 1." The most aggravating oversight, however, is on page 111 in the Legend of Zelda guide. A bright heading declares "Here is a complete map of the overworld." Except it isn't. That's right. One of the most iconic world maps in gaming history didn't make it into the book because, by all appearances, someone forgot to paste it in. Oops!

I'm a big fan of classic video games and I had hoped that this book would make a great addition to my library. The cover is fantastic, done in the style of a giant NES cartridge. It even has a mock warning about using benzene and alcohol-based cleaners on it for added authenticity. Unfortunately, the old adage about judging a book by its cover goes both ways - the cover is the best part of this book. The inside contents leave a lot to be desired. The games are covered in only the most superficial of detail; there are no interviews with their creators, no insights to their development, no interesting facts or trivia. It's like someone copy/pasted previews from old issues of Nintendo Power and called it a day. There are also some pretty glaring omissions as well. Take page 111 for example, which covers the original Legend of Zelda. "Here is a map of the overworld" proclaims the top of the page... and then they forgot to put in the map. Just disappointing throughout.

I hate to tell you, but nearly ALL the material is just re-printed articles and game content from early Nintendo Power magazine. I don't have my issues anymore, but the writing is exactly like what you would see in the magazine. Some articles even state what issue they're from, and some Counselor's Corner sections are directly from Nintendo Power. The interview with Shigeru Miyamoto is from the Jan/Feb issue of 1990. If you know this ahead of time, then it's not a bad collection of tips, maps and strategies. But this is content EXACTLY as it was originally seen in the early 1990's. This is NOT a dedicated fan telling you his thoughts and personal strategies on each game -- its the same watered-down kid-friendly writing you would expect from Nintendo Power. Aside from two pages of introductions, there is NOTHING really original here, and as others have pointed out, the Zelda overworld map is missing, and there are a few other mistakes. It's nice seeing this content again, and it looks good on a coffee table, but there's no original work here... sad to say.

This book is awesome and reminds me of the days of reading through a Nintendo Power Magazine I would get in the mail. The cover (in the shape of a NES Cartridge) is a nice touch and protects the book when I do not have it out.
I had read a lot of reviews that said there is suppose to be a huge Zelda map in this book. That the author even makes mention of it in the table of contents. I am thinking mine must be a different version print or release and I do not have this. I do have all the labyrinth levels 1-9 that are in the original game mapped out and the items you get after defeating all the enemies but the outer-world Zelda map seems to have been removed from my version of the book.

The paperback version is what I bought, knowing the complaints ive seen id rather pay half the price for the paperback as I was still curious.
Yes the issues of quality are apparent, very mixed quality inages, no high res pics a lot of then are dark and blurry. I still find it an awesome book and dont mind the quality issues too much, like the thin wavy paper or typos. The biggest issue is the missing Zelda Map. That seems like a huge thing to miss as this book is mainly a strategy guide for the games it speaks about. I knew it was missing before buying, but seeing for myself really makes me sad.
Despite the complaints it is still a fun interesting book, but the issues mainly typos and missing Zelda map should not of happened. This is why i rate it 3 stars. If I paid retail price I would of rated it lower, or if I bought the hardback version id of rated lower due to quality for price paid.

Missing maps, publishing company don't care about you as a customer...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 28, 2016Verified Purchase
The book is incomplete, the supposed to be Zelda upper world map is missing due to a print error and also contains errors and mishaps here and there...
The publishing company "Prima games" will help you out, by offering you to register for a free online account where you can download the missing Zelda maps, completely misses the whole thing by buying a rather expensive analog book; No need to be online!
I would not recommend this book, printed on cheap paper, otherwise looks ok in the bookshelf or gets you warm burning it in your fireplace.

Great idea, bad reseearch and print

Firstly the item was damaged, this is due to the printing process, no fault of Amazon, who offered to refund me. The book on the whole of what you can read is inaccurate about a number of things. Clearly who ever wrote this did no do there homework. Where is the map for The Legend of Zelda as well...really odd. Great idea, bad reseearch and print.

Yes it's good but it has issues

I got my book late because Amazon had given me the wrong delivery date so 1 star for that but the book is pretty good yeah the pages are thin but there's a lot of content and looks great in the slip case for display. The people who made the book should definitely of added the Zelda map what were they thinking? Anyway buy it if you like collecting video game books don't buy it if it's the first video game book your thinking of getting.

Beautifully presented. High quality in every way. Really thick paper. The sleeve that mimics a NES case is a nice touch. Think I'll buy the SNES version now...
