Josh Portwood is finally free from dwelling in his brother’s shadow at college. He lives life to the fullest each and every day as graduation approaches. All of his carefully laid plans are thrown for a loop when his ex resurfaces with a plea to get back together, which closely coincides with his first encounter with Payton. Much as he tries, Josh can’t stop thinking about Payton.
When Josh finally convinces Payton to give him a chance, it takes some coaxing on his part to get her to loosen up and give him a chance. But he’s nothing if not steadfast in his efforts to show her that it’s okay to bend and break some rules. It’s up to Payton to decide if the risk of straying from the path she’s painstakingly laid is worth the reward of spending forever with the man who’s shown her how to live and love.
What a powerhouse of a story! I rode an emotional rollercoaster from one chapter to the next as my laughter turned into tears and then back again. The realism of the characters—both primary and secondary—blew me away. This is proof of Ms. Robertson’s ability to expertly craft a story with descriptive narration and natural dialogue that places readers in front-row seats as each scene unfolds before them in living color. I couldn’t turn pages fast enough to see what would happen next, and yearned for more when I reached the last one. Thankfully, this is the first book in a series, and you can bet that I’ll read the other installments soon to learn more about the other Portwood brothers. If their stories are even half as good as this one, I’m in for a real treat.
Josh had been letting the past rule his life for too long. Finally being at school, he’d become his own man, and he’d been putting all that behind him. Just when he thought he had it all put together, life got crazy. Not only did his ex-show back up, but Josh also found he couldn’t get Payton Whitmore out of his head.
Once Josh convinces Payton to give him a shot, she’s so closed off that he wonders if it’s even worth it. Josh can tell there’s something special about Payton though, and as soon as he goes all in, he’s ready to show her that some rules are made to be broken.
Playing by the Rules is a heartfelt story about trust, love and overcoming life’s obstacles. Ever since an accident, Payton has been going through the motions. Class, homework, study, and repeat. Lately she’s been forgetting things she normally wouldn’t and headaches have been killing her. Payton trudges on determined not to let it affect her studies. Then she meets Josh. Josh was handsome and seemed to really like her. She had decided long ago that relationships were not for her but felt her heart changing the more time she spent with Josh.
I really loved this book. I laughed and cried throughout the book. Loved Payton’s personality and Josh is such a sweetheart! I enjoyed the part where the author introduced Josh’s family especially his twin. This is also the first book by this author. The author done an amazing job on writing this book and I can’t wait to read about Jackson. The story is good and you will loved it and I’m officially a fan!
Payton's been through a lot and Emily does an awesome job writing her pain, both physically and emotionally. I had a hard time focusing on life, wanting to just read it straight through!!!
Josh is the man for her. He sees the Payton he loves and he's willing to stay the path until their future together is secure.
This was a great first book in this series. It left me anxious to read the second one, wanting to see more glimpses of their lives together!
