Editorial Reviews

There are very few artists who truly define an era. A select list of musicians over the years drew a line in the sand before the Beatles, there was no British Invasion; before Nirvana, no such thing as "alternative rock." Britney Spears is one of those pivotal figures. Teen-pop exploded with the release of her debut album, in 1999, and Spears became the best-selling female artist in the 2000s, with over 100 million albums sold. Michael Jackson and Madonna sought her out as a collaborator and from Beyonce to Rihanna, Miley Cyrus to Nicki Minaj, the pop stars who emerged in her wake all claimed Spears as an influence. Always provoking extreme public reactions, she has stated, "I don't want to be in between. I think that's boring." In addition to Britney's biggest singles, this compilation also illustrates her career-long dedication to cutting-edge sounds on the dancefloor. One of her first singles, "(You Drive Me) Crazy," is included here in its "Stop Remix!" form, while the collection closes with 2009 s "Circus," reworked by remix master Diplo.

Britney has several greatest hits collections out already, most recently in 2009 with "The Singles Collection". Now comes this rock-bottom priced "very best" compilation.

"Playlist: The Very Best of Britney Spears" (14 tracks; 51 min.) covers much of the same ground of the previous greatest hits collections, but it is very nicely updated with 3 hits from the 2011 "Femme Fatale" album: "Till The World Ends", "Hold It Against Me" and "I Wanna Go". To perhaps entice the more rabbid Brtiney fan, there is also the new "Circus [Diplo Circus Remix]", not that you really need to have it. There are many other great choice hits on here, many of the "classics", but this is certainly not a comprehensive "best of", hence titled the "very best of", I suppose. Regretfully, this compilation is not sequenced chronologically, but that's just me.

Selling at a rock-bottom price, even with many hits missing, this is a no-brainer for anyone wanting to get a casual introduction to Britney. I saw her again in concert last year on the "Femme Fatale" tour, and putting aside whether she was lip-synching some of the songs (which I don't care about), it was a fabulous concert experience. Britney is getting yet more exposure resulting from her judging role on the "X Factor", and I suspect this release is a way of cashing in on that while we await her next album. Meanwhile, this compilation is a can't-miss for any casual Britney fan. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Like other reviews have stated, this is not the first or quintessential Britney Spears compilation, but it does an excellent job covering Spears' almost 15-year career.

This compilation favours Spears' dance songs, so there is no "Sometimes" or "Everytime" included here. From start to finish, it's an upbeat affair. What is impressive is how consistently good Spears' music has been over the years. Her latest hits "Hold You Against Me" and "'Til The World Ends" stand up well against her classic Hits "... Baby One More Time" and "Toxic". A bonus mix of "Circus" is ialso ncluded. The only major omission is "3", but personally, that has never been a favourite of mine.

At a budget price and featuring excellent sound, this is a must-buy if you don't have a Britney compilation in your music collection.

My 5* standard is Katy Perry. At 70 years-of-age I could never forget the passion of late 60's and early 70's music and avoided loud/can't hear the singer's lyrics of the 80s and 90s. Some pretty nasty stuff. I heard Katy Perry on the radio by accident early in 2014 and realized there was some vibrant, exciting, fun, women singers out there and have been exploring their music ever since. I avoided Britney in her immature teeny bopper and out-of-control years but given her new maturity and responsibility, decided to give this "best of" album a try. I am pleasantly surprised that her "best" is pretty good and there are some tunes, lyrics, playfulness that approach Katy Perry but by no means rate Katy's 5*. But then nobody probably ever will in my book.

This is a great compilation (and very affordable) for those who do not own a Britney Spears album. It comes with a great booklet that includes liner notes, a few photographs, and some facts about each track (peak positions on Billboard's Hot 100, writers, etc). The songs are remastered so that's a nice incentive for fans to purchase this album as well. It would have been great if all the tracks were in chronological order and the Circus remix is a random addition but overall is a good compilation album to own.

Contains All the songs that I still enjoy listening to more than 10 years later. Many haven't aged. All the essential hits from Brit for me who liked her a lot without being a huge fan. My go to CD for when I need to be energized while driving. Recommended!

This 2012 compilation Playlist: The Very Best of Britney Spears covers much of the same ground as 2009's The Singles Collection but does take into account 2011's Femme Fatale, adding "Till the World Ends" and "Hold It Against Me." What was cut from Singles is generally not missed, as the big songs are here -- "Baby One More Time," "You Drive Me Crazy," "Oops...I Did It Again," "I'm a Slave 4 U," "Toxic" -- making this arguably a preferable comp to its full-price predecessor. A very must-have for every busy working britney fan who always preferred a compressed on the go britney list.

She's pop royalty and this collection is only a fraction of her 40+ actual singles that were released in total. Say what you want about her image, her voice, or her decisions, but nobody can deny the ultimate humble power of Ms. Spears.

If you want a more "complete" collection of her hits, check out: "The Essentials: Britney Spears" --> this has 2 full discs (36 songs?) of all her major hits. Trust me... this will take you down memory lane... listen and enjoy!

This is the best CD I've ever bought, I think. Unlike most CD's (even many greatest hits compilations), there is no filler here. Nothing but the greatest Britney songs, and all of them upbeat so it would be great for a gay party!
