Now that the tiles are here and we have had a chance to play with them and compare them I am very pleased with the purchase.
Similarities Between Playmags and Magnatiles:
-magnet strength is comparable
-sets are compatible and interchangeable
-durability seems comparable (time will tell...but so far they seem the same)
Differences Between Playmags & Magnatiles:
-Magnatiles have a small metal rivet in each corner of the tile (Playmags do not)
-colors are different (I actually like the variety of the Playmag colors better)
-Playmags offer a more diverse variety of shapes and building pieces
-Playmags are much cheaper
Overall I would buy these Playmags again. My son loves them just as much as the Magnatiles (if not more because of the fence, car, and window pieces). It also helps that I bought 150 pieces of Playmags for just a little over what a set of 100 Magnatiles would cost.
Both were 100 piece sets. They are the same size and are compatible with each other. They both have the same array of colors (except that playmags additionally have yellow in the assortment), both have large and small squares and the 3 different kinds of triangles. Playmags also have a car, windows, and rectangles that are half the size of the small squares (this means less plain squares though, in order to add these other shapes to the mix). Visually, the only difference is that the magna-tiles have a grommet in each corner and these do not, and that the shades of color vary (not an issue).
After many tests, they are definitely not as strong as magna-tiles. They are very close though and certainly a great option if you are looking for a more reasonably priced set of magnetic tiles. I built 2 identical skyscrapers using only squares and the magna-tile tower went several levels higher than the playmag tower before each collapsed (I retested this several times to make sure it wasn't just a bad build on my part). Also, I found that when building walls for a tower and starting with a square flat on the table, the magna-tiles are strong enough to stand on their own while you get the next piece whereas the playmag square would fall over onto the table (so with those we have to have 2 squares in hand in order to make vertical walls). Another problem is that the playmags tend to repell each other and you need to flip them around to get them to join together (very frustrating). These seems to happen the most with the little rectangles which are our least favorite and least used pieces because of it.
I like having one set of each because it is nice to have those window squares and the car, but I don't find much use for the rectangles and my boys don't seem to use them much when building (they are always the leftover pieces). Overall, I really like that magna-tiles is heavier on the squares ( there's 50 of them and only 32 in the playmags) because they are the core to any structures we build. We use these on light panels from constructive playthings (awesome by the way and super thin) and they are lots of fun especially right now in the winter when it gets dark early and we can enjoy these illuminated in the dark.
