Then Whitney meets Hannah, and the burden of living a lie becomes too heavy to bear. Interspersed with Whitney's inner conflicts are her battles on the ice. She made me wonder if Victor Kalinski is her cousin. (Read Point Shot). I love the sports aspect of this book, and most of Ms. Locey's novels. She's accurate and creates excitement, as if I was watching the game, ringside.
Then there is her writing, which is fantastic. Her descriptions are spot on, putting me right at the scene, but never too much. I don't have to wade through paragraphs of extraneous words. I h scoredave read other others in this series and can hardly wait for the next one to come out. Another goal scored on this book which steps out of the box to bring a very human story to light. Bravo!
The story follows Whitney, a hockey player, who is hiding her sexuality from everyone! She is terrified of the repercussions, certain she will be ostracized and her life will be ruined. She meets Hannah and is absolutely drawn to her. She finds the courage to announce her sexuality to her team and awaits the fury.... You'll have to read the book to find out how this goes down.
I was left feeling that I should know more of the characters in the story. There were so many names and obvious back stories that I felt I should maybe know. Then I realised that this is book #5 in a series and the penny dropped so I do recommend to read the other books before starting this one.
A Book Lovers Emporium.
Two things about V.L. Locey, if you've followed her on social media is you know she loves hockey and writing. Playmaker is an F/F hockey novella. It's a short read which I favor in times when I want to read some amazing and fast. There's a grittiness only a hockey story can give, but there's heart and sweetness as well.
The two MC's in this book are Hannah and Whitney. Whitney is an in the closet hockey player. Fear pretty much has kept her there. Fear is a powerful thing that controls a lot of us. Until she meets Hannah. Because of her, she is given the strength and courage to open that door and tell the world.
V.L Locey's writing is amazing, she grasps the emotion very well in this book. How the characters felt was never in question. I would have loved more background but when writing a novella you accept there is some "need for more" somewhere.
This is a lovely read with a lot to enjoy.
In the book ‘Playmaker’ the character Whitney Beaupré has a secret, one that she has kept for years. And if you are aware of the writings by Ms. Vicki, then you know. This book pertains to hockey. Therefore, Whitney has kept this secret both on and off the ice, and it is eating her up inside.
Whitney feels like she is trapped within herself, in a never-ending prison, not allowed to say or do what she wants, and she wants to be free, but at the same time, to break free, could be just as terrifying.
Then one day, Whitney meets the beautiful Hannah Kym, and the attraction to this woman is something much fiercer than she has ever experienced before. Not only that, it is instantaneous, something Whitney has also never felt before, it was like being pulled by a magnet.
Being on the Venom Hockey team has been Whitney’s main focus, but now her focus seems to be distracted. Her heart is compelled to call her out, and make her realize, that she doesn’t need to hide her true feelings any longer.
Whitney battles with her thoughts, and feelings, and realizes, being gay is not a crime, and she can come out of the closet. She just needs to build her own confidence, and hope that Hannah will return the feelings. The first step, is to stand strong, and upwards, and face her own fears, and admit and even confess to everyone else, her own secret, that she has been hiding all of these years.
In this story, Vicki helps you as the outsider, see and feel, that as an LGBTQ person, you are not the only person battling with secrets, and hiding your true self from others. And that believe it or not, as you will learn, and maybe didn’t even know, there may be another feeling the same way about you, just waiting on you to make the first move.
It is time to stop hiding in the closet. The world is changing, be confident, and stand up for yourself, and to others. There isn’t a need to hide any longer. Yes, people will judge. But you are you, and the only way to be a successful you, is by trying, and going for it.
I give this book five amazing stars. I like the fact that Vicki addressed this issue. And she did a beautiful job at it too! Very impressive, job well done Vicki, as always! If you aren’t a fan of Vicki yet, like myself, you will be now! She is truly an amazing writer!
