From School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-- Winther has drawn material from the folklore of many nations and cultures, including that of Uganda, Nigeria, Egypt, and the Kalahari Bushmen. While the plays are simple and the morals obvious, they offer some interesting staging possibilities. To begin with, they present a cast of fantastic creatures--primarily animals and spirits--that should be appealing to young performers. Such an array of characters also allows ample opportunity for elaborate and creative costuming. Additionally, a number of pieces, The Snore or The Song in particular, are clearly designed to incorporate the elements of music and dance. The scale of production can easily be tailored to the resources of a given group. A brief history of each tale and a description of its cultural origin is included. The book concludes with production notes that provide character breakdowns for each play as well as information on technical requirements.
