This and other rescue bots are perfect toys for the 3-5 year old age range. They are built very sturdy, the transform with, for the most part, just one motion (for boulder specifically just pull apart or push together his arms to have him transform.) However, I am not sure what this new Energon version is about. The difference between the Energon version of these toys and the regular ones are the translucent blue arms and parts on the robots. This doesn't make sense in that this is never mentioned in any episodes of the show, and it makes them look different from what the kids are used to seeing on TV. Also, the new Energon versions of the robots each bring a tool that can be attached to the robot. The boulder version brings a blue energon drill, but like other reviewers have mentioned, the arms aren't posable, so he just points it at the ground. Even when in vehicle mode, the drill attaches but at a slight angle. Basically, it's a useless accessory that will likely get lost within 24 hours of coming out of the packaging.

Unfortunately, its seems they have phased out the original versions of the robots, so that if you are purchasing them now you are forced to buy these tacky Energon versions. It's too bad, because Boulder was my favorite of the Rescue Bots, and now he doesn't even match his other robot buddies that I had purchased earlier.

When you spend years without toys being on your Christmas shopping list, it feels a little strange to be looking at some of the same toy brands you remember buying for your kids, only now it's for your grandkids! Deja vu. I remember standing in line in the late 1980s, waiting for the toy store to open so I could try to grab the latest Transformer or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (probably would be worth a mint right now if I'd held onto them, and it sure would've been nice to be able to see them doing double duty with our grandsons!) I must say, it sure is a lot more convenient to be doing most of my shopping on line these days. I do have to admit being concerned about whether we'd gone beyond our middle grandson's capabilities last Christmas when we purchased the Bumblebee Rescue Bot... he was a few months shy of 3, and the decades old Transformers I remembered were always so complicated to transform. They sure have fixed that! So much so, that we followed it up by buying the rest of the "Energize" series (Boulder, along with Heatwave the Fire-bot, Optimus Prime, Chase the Police-Bot and Blades the Copter-Bot) for his 3rd birthday.

It only took one demonstration from our older grandson for his little brother to catch on - even their dad was amazed by how easy it was! This one is such a neat looking bulldozer when he transforms - love that paint job! I'd been a bit worried that something without any lights or sounds would bore him to tears, since he's very action oriented, but flipping these guys back and forth between modes seems to keep his attention for a lot longer than I thought it would.

We got Boulder for our toddler when he turned 2 (along with the rest of them). Boulder is, by far, the easiest rescue bot to use. Our two year old was able to transform him right off the bat, no demonstrations by mom or dad needed.

The next bot he learned to transform was Blades (he just turned in the arms, rather than using the dial on the back), followed by Chase, Heatwave, Bumblebee, then Optimus Prime. Optimus Prime was definitely the hardest for him to get - he didn't get 'good' at transforming him until he was about 34 months old.

The tools are one of his favorite parts of the toys. Sure, only some of them are mentioned in the show (and the blue arms/legs are different than the show) but my boys have *never* had a problem identifying the toys. They love putting the tools into their arms or the various holes (when they're in vehicle mode) so that they can come to the rescue.

So if you're wanting a cool transformer toy for your kid, I definitely recommend these. We've had the six toys for about ten months now, and the only piece that's had to be glued was Heatwave's watercanon.

Check your local stores - we've found all of them for $11.99 at Target and Walmart, so if they aren't on sale at Amazon you might be able to find them there.

For children who are getting into transformers this is the PERFECT start. They transform in 1-2 easy steps (without adult assistance). The cartoon where your children will learn about the rescue bot is age appropriate for a 3 year old, not scary or violent.

Purchased this as a gift for my 5-year-old boy as a companion to the book, "Transformers: Rescue Bots: Meet Boulder the Construction-Bot (Passport to Reading Level 1) ." My son loves it along with the other Playskool Heroes Transformers Rescue Bots , but this one seems to give my boys (3, 5) the most trouble. The fit when transforming into a bulldozer over time has degraded. The robot no longer stays tightly in bulldozer mode and has a distinct separation in the bucket. Still, that hasn't diminished my boys enjoyment of the toy.
