I was in my twenties when Sesame Street debuted, and in my thirties when Elmo was born, so I never got into collecting all the toys and stuff. I do remember the riots in stores with people trying to get their hands on the Tickle Me Elmo toys in the 1990s. The Big Hugs Elmo does a lot more than Tickle Me Elmo did, and he's bigger, too. He talks and sings and makes a lot of movements. He's especially funny when he goes to sleep, first singing a lullaby, then saying goodnight, snoring for a minute or so, then quieting down until you wake him by pressing his left foot. Kids will probably most enjoy hugging Elmo, since he hugs back and talks, but it's also fun holding him upside down, when he gets a little silly. I'm impressed with the wide range of movement Elmo has in his arms and mouth, and also with his song and speech repertoire. That took some pretty advanced design. Elmo can even sense when he's being held upside down or laying on his back.
I do have a couple of negative comments, though, but they're not deal-breakers. Don't think of Big Hugs Elmo as a big plush stuffed figure. The box that holds the batteries and control mechanisms fills much of the space above his legs. Hugging Elmo is not like hugging a plush stuffed figure at all. You can feel the firmness of the box. Also, inserting the four AA batteries is a frustrating experience, requiring nimble fingers and possibly a small flashlight to shine into the battery compartment. (You'll also need a small Phillips screwdriver to open the compartment.) Hopefully the batteries won't need changing very often.
Despite some minor negatives, I'll still predict that Big Hugs Elmo will be a big hit with the youngsters, and probably with their parents as well, at least the moms. Especially the moms. I've already had to slide over in bed so my wife can cuddle with Elmo and hear his lullabies. Do you know how humiliating it is to be displaced by a furry singing robot?
The toy is durable and soft, although it's not very soft, as others have pointed out. The personality and cuteness, along with the muppet fur, are what make Elmo huggable. The body itself is very stiff (as you might expect, with lots of batteries and electronics to bring him to life), and the arms and legs do seem a bit spindly and fragile (and again, very wiry and hard underneath the fur).
But the toy's interactivity and cuteness bridge the gap, so that when Elmo comes to life, you can't help but want to hug him. The toy offers a nice variety of positive sayings and catchphrases, excellent for kids just mastering their language skills in complex sentences, and he's as cute as he can be -- as close as your child will get to having a real version of their very own irresistible Elmo to hug!
I'd definitely recommend this toy for those with kids who are old enough to treat the toy with respect, as it requires care for a long life. But even on the shelf, the sight of Big Hugs Elmo is sure to make someone smile. Elmo is a toy that brims with positivity, that is a welcome reminder that your child can always find a hug when they need one. The toy's big muppety grin is cute enough that, after a long day at work, you might just find yourself giving him a hug yourself!
