I didn't realize I could only use a specific screw driver so I tried to use one that I had and damaged the metal screw inside that I need to unscrew to open the battery compartment. I searched in a few stores for the Philips screw driver but couldn't find the right one.
My daughters father said the only way to open the battery compartment was to break it with a screw driver to put the batteries in and then put the cover back down so that's what we did.
After about 5 minutes he had broken the cover off just enough to get the batteries in. After getting the batteries in elmo was great but the next day when I turned elmo on his mouth didn't move for a few seconds and when hes suppose to extend his arms to hug you he DOESNT.
Im beginning to think the arms might have been damaged during the prying and wrestling it took to open the battery compartment. Im very disappointed that he isn't working as he should, I thought the whole point of the big hugs elmo was to hug the kid or anyone who plays with it. He definitely hasn't put his arms around my neck the way he is doing to the boy in the picture.
I haven't tried out the lullaby feature yet so Im not sure if that works either. I will keep trying him out to see if I can get him to HUG the right way.
My 1 yr old premature daughter seems to like it, she almost looked amaze when she saw him. For 55 dollars I was expecting it to work exactly as described by the manufacture. It works pretty good, but I don't think its worth 55 dollars, its worth maybe around $20 or $30 the most.
Sleep mode has Elmo speaking in a slower, softer voice and is kind of soothing but still a bit loud to me. He says "Elmo is so Sleepy" and plays a sleepy time melody and then proceeds to snore. The snoring doesn't last too long but I have a feeling it would be disturbing to some youngsters. I am not sure why they bothered to make a separate Sleep mode because even in Play mode, when Elmo is placed on his back he automatically goes into Sleep Mode. This is kind of irritating but there is a positive to that in my eyes. If your child is done playing with him and hasn't been taught how to turn him off, then at least that Sleepy Time song can alert you to the fact that Elmo is down and you can then turn him off to save battery power.
While Elmo is cute and all, his battery pack and on/off/mode buttons are inside his back. I found it kind of difficult to get the batteries in the pack because the pack doesn't pull out like some other toys. You have to open Elmo's velcro back seam to change from Play, Sleep modes. The manufacturer might have decided to have him designed that way so kids couldn't accidentally change his modes but I just find it a bit inconvenient.
My biggest issue with this Elmo is that he comes with a little piece of paper that shows how NOT to store Elmo. He is not to be left face down at all or lying face up with his arms extended. The paper says to make sure Elmo's arms are in a natural resting position at his sides before turning off for storage. Well, his arms don't manually go down so you have to just kind of watch him until his arms go down to his side and then quickly turn him to Off mode.
I purchased this for my Grandson who is only 6 months because he loves all the other Elmo things I have. Of course, I could not let Grandson play with it unattended at this age but I honestly wouldn't let him play with it unattended at the age of 3 either as Elmo looks quite delicate and I could see even the slightest abuse easily ruining the mechanics of his arms.
Big Hugs Elmo is also a battery sucker. I am definitely going to put rechargeables in him next battery change.
All in all, he isn't a bad Elmo. I just think he is kind of expensive for the fact that if you don't watch during your child's play time with him then he will be kind of useless very quickly. I paid too much for him through Amazon. I recently saw him in a well known National Discount Mart for about $10 less than I paid.
I gave Big Hugs Elmo 3 stars because I think he is a fairly good toy but I see several redesign improvements that can be made.
Two things to know:
-There is an on/off/sleep button on the back for those times when you just can't hear "Elmo needs a hug" one more time.
-The most difficult thing about the set up is locating and then using a small Phillips head screwdriver to open up a back compartment to insert the batteries (4 AA's, not included) while a normally adorable two year old is crying and screaming like a banshee "Elmo!Elmo!Elmo!."
