The fan can get a little noisy, I will turn it off and back on and that will quiet it down. If it wasn't for that it would be a five star.
Update 14 months later, Feb '15. Only six weeks out of warranty, the heater fan became so noisy that the heater could not be run. It was simply DEAFENING! We replaced it this week with a different brand. I plan to contact the company to see if there is any help forthcoming from them (not expected as it is out of warranty) and will price a replacement heater fan, assuming that is the problem and the company will help me with instructions to change it out. Once I reach final resolution, I will adjust the rating stars.
Purchased Dec '13. We have an extremely large kitchen (16'x25') with large windows as a result of a remodel a few years ago and in the winter, it tends to be a bit cool. This heater was placed in the corner near our breakfast table and really makes the whole kitchen area, open to the family room, warm and cozy (so a fairly large airspace is affected by the heater). It does not heat up the hardwood floor under the heater, nor does it significantly heat a rug about 15" in front of it, i.e., I can easily place my hand on the floor and rug immediately in front of the heater without any fear of being burned. The material seems to be a tough plastic or lightweight ceramic, designed to look like cast iron, so it is lightweight, but still attractive. The top does not get hot at all--the heat action is the heater at the bottom of the unit. It does move a bit when I open the door to turn it on and off; I plan to try some rubber casters to see if I can stop that. We are very pleased with the unit--it's functional, and once you get past the fact that it's a plastic fireplace with fake flames, it's actually attractive. The unit comes in a large box, well packed, with the legs removed. It is a 3 min job with a screwdriver to install them. The cord is heavy duty and grounded--a three prong outlet is required.
This item was purchased as a gift for my husband for x-mas, so by the time the unit was discovered to be defective, it was over 30 days since it was purchased. I contacted the re-seller, and their return policy is outrageous: 50% restocking fee and I have to ship the item on my own dime to NYC.
Since this was bought through a reseller, Amazon offered no help whatsoever. My advice would be to only purchase items directly from Amazon. avoid resellers whenever possible.
The re-seller in this case is buying this item from Costco, and they act as the middle man; the item was drop-shipped directly from Costco. I suggest just buy it directly from Costco as (1) it is cheaper ($190 shipped), and (2) Costco has a generous return policy.
