Purchase and installation:
Price is definitely the biggest reason we opted for this stove. The previous owners of the house had a chimney fire that wrecked the stones in the hearthstone stove. We were quoted 8k for a new hearthstone... 8k!! Compare to $800 and you have our rationale. It arrived in good condition, all pieces included and we bought a bunch of piping to make sure that we got the right sizes to install. That said, the piping was a pain but oh well. That has nothing to do with the stove and you have to do it right for draft and ash fall, etc... That took awhile. We did not opt for a professional because almost everything was there from out old stove we just had to extend, connect and check integrity, etc. All said that was about $30. Setting up the stove was not bad but the instructions were definitely generic. You may need amplification in places. Their website was helpful and forums.
Use and Curing:
It does need curing the first three- five times you run it and that does tend to be smelly. We opened doors. The hard part of this was learning what this girls needs. I found out real quick that we needed a solid bed of newspaper, a layer of twigs and sticks and then a small log- bark if we had scraps. She needs to get to 200 degrees (btw if you're new to wood stoves, spring for the coiled thermometer!) and then she is golden. It is best if you get there with just the kindling. Once you hit 200 you can start to add wood and my biggest learning curve here is that there is a pipe right in the center of the stove that lets out right at the door. Do not block this! If your fire is only so so check it! We "dig out the middle" when the fire isn't cooperating and I think it is because that pipe is blocked. It works great beyond those two tweaks- and do I wish I didn't have to deal with them? Sure! But our old top of the line stove had her quirks too. It is like any appliance.
Our house is 1870 sqft and two levels. The stove is at the base of the stairs so it is prefectly placed to heat both floors. If we are trying to warm the entire house ( including spare bedrooms) we could probably get it to 72-73. Really nice when it is 20 out. If we close doors we find it gets too hot in the common areas- 76-77. We are happy with the performance when we are awake and here to babysit and add logs once per hour. At night and when we leave it leaves something to be desired. You only get about 3-4 hours max of heat production and then you have to start from scratch again. That is with full flu closed! Hence I took a star. The hearthstone would still be warm after 6-7 hours. I miss that. Oh well. I saved $7200.
All in all, long review. We are happy with this purchase. Money v. Performance balance was optimized.
It's solidly built (Made In America - where else?), VERY efficient and heats up our large living room (converted to home office) in minutes. It's easy to maintain and clean (has a built-in ash compartment), good looking and easy to feed....
So much better than our den built-in fire place insert that came with the house when we bought it...!
it doesn't come close to putting out any real heat. I tried to return it, but menards says go to the manufacturer. I call them and their tech is in India, no help, and on hold multiple times. The stove seldom gets hot enough that I can't put my hand on the trivet I have on top, and recently it smokes horrible. This has been my worst purchase ever.
