Fen Dexter is a solitary woman who prefers a quiet night at home with her dog, Hector, over anything else --- except maybe the company of her two nieces she raised. One evening, as she happily prepares for a night in, a nasty storm hits the California coast. When Fen's power goes out, a relatively frequent occurrence since she lives on the outskirts of town, and a stranger comes knocking on her door with a knife in hand, her evening goes from quiet to scary in a heartbeat.

Vivi, Fen's oldest niece, is dealing with her own problems. Having recently broken up with her fiancé, she's emotionally overloaded, and as an emergency room doctor, she needs to keep her emotions in check. Wanting nothing more than to see her Aunt Fen, the storm feels like one more hurdle to overcome in an already hectic night. Right before her shift is to end, a young woman is brought in, her throat and wrists slashed, and in bad shape with little chance of surviving. Vivi does her best and sends her off to surgery but not before finding out that the woman is the latest victim of the serial killer who leaves notes hidden on his victims' bodies that say "please don't tell." When her sister, JC, a free spirit with no job, money, or place to live, shows up at her house, Vivi is at the end of her rope. After dealing with her own relationship issues and a grueling scene at the hospital, the last thing she wants to deal with is her sister's mess of a life.

Soon after, worlds collide. It turns out that Fen's stranger has a connection to the serial killer. This makes not only Fen suspicious --- she's still inexplicably attracted to the stranger, though --- but also Detective Brad Merlin, who is very much interested in getting a date with Vivi.

I got this book because of all the good reviews. I can't finish it. The story is very slow, predictable. I figured out who's the bad guy half way through the book and went to the end of the book to verify that I was right. All the characters a shallow and unlikable. I can't believe detective Brad Merlin ask Vivi for her phone number while she's in ER trying to save the victim's life. That's just unprofessional and wrong. And who does Fen want this stranger to be in love with? Herself or Vivi? The whole conversation between her and the stranger in the night of the storm is very frustrating to follow. Fen was acting like a babbling fool. Vivi, being an intelligent ER doctor, fell in love with a Frenchmen she cannot communicate with without a translator? I have to question how intelligent she actually is. I don't even want to talk about JC. All the women are so clingy and needy. It gets to a point that I really don't care who falls in love with who and who kills who.

While this book is "new", for readers of Ms. Adler previous books one will note the similarity to her book "Now Or Never". Serial killer, two police partners, the theme of finding one of the murders' victims still alive, and as soon has the murderer entered the story I knew "who dunne it". Even the bit with focusing on the cars and what that says about the killer--all similar to her earlier book. I really liked "Now Or Never". That book is on my keeper shelf, however, this story--meh. There were people placed in this book that I really could not connect to and had no idea why they even showed up. My advice is to get this book from the library if you really think you have to read it. I am sure you, too, will be disappointed.

I am not sure where all these 4 and 5 star reviews are coming from but I can't in all faith give one to Please Don't Tell. The characters and the dialogue are very contrived. There is no subtlety whatsoever in the story;I was able to very quickly determine who the serial killer was and that is something that I usually have no idea about.

The story starts off with an older woman in Carmel who is weathering a bad storm by herself when a knock comes at her door and she allows a total stranger to enter with a knife in his hand. Before the night is over they somehow develop chemistry, even though he has recently lost his fiance to a violent death. By the end of the novel, they are madly in love even though they will only meet one more time.

I am sorry but this book was not well written. It seems the author could not decide if the book should be a murder mystery or a contemporary romance. It fails at both genres. I can't recommend.

This book was creepy, romantic and funny. Fen, an older woman who lives in a somewhat rural area, has two nieces whom she raised after their parents death. The two nieces, Vivian and JC, her nieces, each has her own problems. Vivian is a busy emergency room doctor, just getting over a break up with a Frenchman. JC is an unsuccessful entertainer who, at this stage of her life, is out of a job and penniless and seriously rethinking her life and career. On a stormy night, a stranger comes to Fen's door, seeking help after an accident at the edge of her property. At first, Fen is frightened, but later becomes more relaxed, to the point of enjoying the man's company, once he stays a while. Meanwhile, there is a serial killer lurking, worrying Vivian and JC, and all signs point to this stranger as the killer. None of them believes this to be true. How will they all figure out what is going on? Is the stranger from the accident the serial killer? If not this man, then who is the killer? However I found myself guessing what was going on about two thirds through the book and figuring out who the killer actually was. Still, I continued to read the book, because I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the romances going on. Overall, this is a book I would recommend to someone who enjoys a good, fast moving, intriguing book.
