Editorial Reviews

By Michael Dalton: 5 Stars: Some people seem to think that erotica is a modern phenomenon, but in fact, one can find examples of it reaching back a very long way. It reached a peak of sorts during the Victorian era, and Victorian erotica has some interesting quirks that one doesn't often see anymore. Scarlet Darkwood's "Pleasure House," set though it is during the 1920s, reminded me immediately of classic Victorian erotica such as "The Education of a Maiden" and "The Memoirs of Fanny Hill." This book is light on plot, but that's not a criticism and not really the point. As with its Victorian antecedents, this book is concerned mostly with pleasures of the flesh-romping through more perversions in a few chapters than most works can manage in an entire novel. This installment follows the travails of Rose, a young woman with more sex drive than self control, and for young ladies in the 1920s, that's a problem. She's packed off by her family to what appears to be some sort of sanitarium, known simply as The House, which proves to be something else entirely. The Pleasure House is a place for those with open minds and overactive libidos to explore every possible method of pleasuring themselves and others, and Rose proves to be an apt pupil indeed. To attempt to summarize all the fleshly indulgences Rose engages in here would do a disservice to both the reader and the author. Rest assured, if you're looking to expand your erotic horizons, you could do a great deal worse than this book. By One voracious reader: 5 Stars Pleasure House by Scarlet Darkwood is one. *wild.* ride. Twenty-year-old Rose is caught behaving with licentious impropriety for the nth too many time. Her dad carts her off to The House, a place where men and women with behavioral issues are either spectacularly cured or never heard from again. Turns out The House specializes in helping people explore their sexual desires. The rest of the novel is quite the education for our young heroine. Pleasure House is a compendium of kinks, including all variations of genders together, spanking, medical play, voyeurism... Oh my gosh I can't even list all the variations. Well written, graphic but not, I don't know, pornographic - the best way I can describe it is to say a sense of wonder pervades the story. Rose has found a place that accepts who she is and encourages her to be all that she can be. The author revels in sharing all those sexcapades. Despite the cover looking melancholy and dark, it's not actually a dark story. More joyful with a touch of angst. The House is an fantastical experiment in sexual open-mindedness gone spiraling down the rabbit hole. Inmates and their attendants completely accept each other, are willing to try new things, and are focused on mutual pleasure. I would have liked the author to spend more time on the encounters, with possibly a few less encounters. It felt like we raced through many of them. I commend Ms. Darkwood on her level of research, and the respect with which she approaches each scene. Much of the book is a few hundred yards to the right of vanilla, but if you're willing to keep an open mind, you'll find much to enjoy, and possibly you'll question the arbitrary societal rules that dictate what's accepted and what's forbidden.

About the Author

Scarlet Darkwood wields a mighty pen, or at the very least, delivers mighty punches to the computer keys when she's typing furiously on a story. She likes dark and twisted, and the weirder, the better.

Always preferring avant garde themes, her stories take the reader on unusual adventures, exploring the darker parts of the human psyche as she whips out cunning prose wrapped in provocative themes. Sometimes she veers from her beaten path and takes a happy-go-lucky romp in the brighter sides of life, kicking up her style into sharp, snappy dialogue and clever descriptions.

Writing in several genres unleashes her imagination so she never grows bored. From a young age, she's enjoyed writing and keeping diaries, but didn't start creating novels until 2012. She's a Southern girl who lives in Tennessee and enjoys the beauty of the mountains. She lives in Nashville with her spouse and two rambunctious kitties.
