These characters are intense and not for the faint of heart. After all, the cast of characters include two separate entities. The first are demons and the second are humans who have forces to rid the world of demons. That's basically it. The two groups hate each other, with good reason. Or so it would seem. That turns the Demonica Series and Pleasure Unbound into the perfect scenario for a fantastic PNR series.
Eidolon was also the perfect demon to start with. Out of his brothers, he is the most level headed. Not that he's perfect, because he's not. He just has more patience and self control. If any demon can change Tayla's opinion it is him. It isn't easy though and both of them fight the attraction as much as they can. The outcome is inevitable, but the journey is crazy and not easy by any means.
There is a lot of ground work laid in Pleasure Unbound for the rest of the series, but the main story didn't suffer because of it. The supporting characters were introduced and added a lot to what was happening with the main focus of the first book. Sometimes world building and background information can leave the main story in the dust, but I didn't get any of that from this book. I like it when a series starts strong. In that way, for me, Pleasure Unbound delivered.
The only complaint that I had about this book I think is that there was so much hate coming off of Tayla. It was totally understandable and I think it wouldn't have been true to her character if she had given in to her attraction any sooner than she did but it still bothered me. I'm not sure if that vibe came from the fact that I was already familiar with some of these characters or not, so I'll let it slide. I still enjoyed the story, regardless. I can't take back the knowledge that I've gained from Lords of Deliverance so I'll just deal.
The next book in the series is Shade's book, Desire Unchained. I've already ordered it, but I've also already ordered the 3rd book in the Lords of Deliverance Series (Lethal Rider). I guess when they get here I'll just have to flip a coin to see which book I read first. ;)
Of the trio of books, this was my favorite. Apart from the times he and Tayla wrestle with each other in all sorts of places, doctor Eidolon is the most controlled of the brothers and his angsty-ness is mostly caused by trying to figure out who's stealing body parts from an assortment of bizarre monsters that show up at his hospital.
Tayla is a typically feisty heroine who's also got a little extra DNA that she never knew about. Her backstory explains why she became a slayer and why for a lot of the book, she's conflicted about which side, demon or slayer, she's going to have to choose.
The interplay between the heroes and heroines of this series is lively, crisp and smart, especially in Pleasure Unbound. There really aren't any "down times" for the characters where the story got boring, it moved along at a nice steady pace, building to an ending that's both surprising and for Eidolon and Tayla, frisky.
I recommend this for fans of the BDB series by J.R. Ward, with the warning that this series is more BDB Light, with more traditional romance (if you can call demons traditional) mixed in with some intrigue and occasionally funny dialogue.
The books, in order:
Pleasure Unbound (Demonica, Book 1)
Desire Unchained: A Demonica Novel (The Demonica Series)
Passion Unleashed (The Demonica Series)
However, once I did get started, I almost didn't continue reading because the first two chapters were a lot of "thinking in exposition". For example, why is the point of view character thinking about the color of his own hair or why is the point of view character explaining something to himself (in an internal thought) things I would assume he would know. I wouldn't think to myself I'm a human, and then define it in detail, to myself. It's distracting, but after the initial exposition, the story picks up, and you don't notice it as much as it goes along.
I didn't connect with the characters as much as I have with other books, but I wasn't cheering for the antagonist to kill them, as I sometimes do if the characters annoy me. :)
The plot is typical paranormal romance - in summary - twenty something woman is demon hunter (mother killed by demon, surprise), she has sex with/ends up falling for demon (surprise), has a lot of angst about this, demons are evil, and oh hey, she's part demon(really? I'm shocked!), she's hot for the hero, but he's evil, blah, blah, eventually realizes not all demons are evil, more conflict, but eventually admits her love for him, he for her, and they get their happily ever after. If you like that, you will love this book. Not a whole lot of worry or tension, (I felt I could put it down at anytime, and not need to rush back to it) but a quick, light read on a cold afternoon. Didn't hate it, didn't love it, but I was willing to give the next one in the series a try.
Happily, I enjoyed the books more as they went along, and recommend you give the series a try.
