Ione had a lot of balls up in the air, and she juggled them beautifully. When the story broke away from the main characters for some side-plot action, it was brief, fluid, and fit into the main story seamlessly. Sometimes I'm tempted to skip those parts that don't deal directly with the main action, but not here. I can see the series building with the groundwork she's laid here, and I'll commit to book two.
My only two criticisms: 1) `Eidolon' is a big mouth-full, even in my head. I hate it when I'm not even sure how to pronounce the hero's name correctly. 2) These books didn't make me cry or laugh, so there's definitely room for improvement. Maybe Ione can ratchet these up.
A couple things that kept me from giving it 5 stars, however, include the position the heroine's in for so much of the book. Despite her strength she's almost entirely powerless and isolated, with no true allies or any other route available to her than what the hero can offer. It would have been even more interesting had she had more independence and a life that was her own. As it was she was almost a rat in a maze. Her skills and what should have been impressive about her were made to be more sad and a reason to pity her than anything.
That said, I still really enjoyed this book. The hero is very sexy and balances darkness & strength with civility & nobility quite well. And his brothers definitely have the potential to carry the following installments.
