Initially, I liked Pearl. She had just lost her mother and she was pulling herself up by her boot straps and trying to survive in a time where African Americans were freed but still one step up from a slave. She went to stay with the only family she had left and planned to work at an oyster shucking factory to pay her way. There she meets Caleb Rockfield, the owner of the plant she works at. Caleb's character is a strong but lonely man who unexpectedly finds himself attracted to a woman he knows he shouldn't be attracted to, especially during the times they live in.
He and Pearl start a romance that they must keep secret or the price they'll pay will be very high and could cost them both everything. After they begin there affair and some things happen, Pearl's indecisiveness about her and Caleb being together slightly soured the story for me. At least until she finally came to her senses. This small part is the reason I couldn't give the story 5 stars. It was a small part but it made a big impact on my review. A few things occurred in this story that I will not give away but overall, it was a wonderful read that I will definitely be reading again in the future. I totally suggest this story to everyone!
