1. The device looks very durable with its aluminum case and heavy wiring.

2. The quality is reflected on the Amazon.com reviews. There are two with "4 stars. All the rest are "5 stars."

3. It is very compact in size. It occupies very little space.

DISADVANTAGES

1. It is very expensive in comparison to similar Orico and Yuba brand USB 3.0 hubs that have aluminum cases and employ vertical inserts for USB devices. They are $15 and $20 less. . . . In return for the extra dollars in savings, you may suffer compatibility problems as experienced by some of the reviewers - quite a few according one knowledgeable user.

For the extra money, I was avoiding the compatibility problems of its competitors. On this matter, I was wrong. In fact, Plugable products are not compatible with each other. I connected a Plugable SATA HDD Docking Station with a Western Digital 2TB Enterprise grade hard drive to the Plugable USB 3.0 7-Port Hub and waited. Nothing was recognized.

To double check, the hub was unattached from the computer. The docking station was reconnected directly to motherboard USB 3.0 ports - everything worked.

Through a process of elimination, this proves a major compatibility problem - an embarrassing one at that. When a manufacturer can not get their own products to work with each other, they probably will have compatibility issues with other brands and other USB 3.0 devices. For these reasons, it is best for the user to avoid this type of product until the manufacturers "get their act together."

The best customer service I ever received.

Unfortunately the first device had a bad power brick.

"Jeff" responded within minutes, send me a replacement right away, didn't even worry about getting the old one back as a priority, rather than getting me up and running.

I received a return shipment label, did not have to pay anything.

Replacement arrived. Device works ok, but something must have happen, it looked like a refurb.

"Jeff" again, apologized right away, and new one is on it's way.

They really want to make it right, AND will have a "talk" with their manufacturer about this issue.
Don't get me wrong, it's a $50 device, they will loose money on this deal, and still care about the customer and future business as well as their reputation.

That's how you grow a company.

There is nothing wrong with the electronics, just was some logistical and bad luck issued.

I WOULD RECOMMEND this product, works with USB3, works behind a thunderbold hub from apple. Works with USB2. looks beautiful.

Plugable, the company which sells this is the BEST, keep it up guys.

USB hubs can be amazingly useful devices. As the assortment of USB devices that we add continues to grow, we often need to find additional and better ways way to connect them to our notebooks and computers to meet our needs.

The Plugable USB3-HUB7A USB 3.0 SuperSpeed 7 Port Hub in Brushed Aluminum is more than just a cosmetic upgrade over previous models. Featuring the VIA Labs VL812 SuperSpeed USB 3.0 hub controller and 858x firmware, this new hub is more evolutionary than revolutionary, and is a good example of a company not resting on its previous laurels. Like its predecessor, this model is fully USB 2.0 compatible and offers an excellent upgrade path for those who are not yet using the USB 3.0 standard.

Getting down to the subjective key points, here are my basic observations, followed by a more in-depth look.

No issues.
Technical recommendations and advice via a Pluggable Technologies representative (Thanks Jeff!!!) were prompt, professional and savvy.
Don't waste your money on a cheap USB 3.0 hub! You'll get what you pay for.
And do note that due to Apple technical limitations with power requirements, you can NOT plug in a keyboard or SuperDrive and have it be functional with a hub.
