Product Description

Improve Speed and Reliability over Faster Networks

The Plugable USB 2.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (USB2-E1000) kicks up network performance of computers with 100Mbps (10/100) Fast Ethernet adapters, using the higher speeds of USB 2.0 ports to achieve up to 300Mbps on a Gigabit network. It also adds the speed and reliability of wired Ethernet to computers with slow or unreliable wireless connections, or to computers without built-in Ethernet.

USB2-E1000

Compatibility

Compatible with:

  • Microsoft Windows—11, 10, 8.x, and 7
  • Linux kernels—3.2 and above have built-in drivers
  • Chrome OS—Support with up-to-date systems
  • Raspberry Pi OS—Jessie, Stretch, Buster
  • Some Android devices, including NVIDIA SHIELD and Nexus Player (check with your device manufacturer for compatibility information)

NOT Compatible With:

  • Not supported on macOS
  • Not recommended for use with FreeBSD or pfSense

Please note, this adapter is not a solution for connecting USB devices like printers, hard drives, etc to a network. This adapter cannot be used to share Ethernet, WiFi, or data between multiple devices. This adapter cannot be used for Preboot Execution Environment (PXE). This adapter is not supported on macOS.

Performance

Performance

If your network speeds are currently limited by slow WiFi or a 100Mbps (10/100) network adapter in your computer, this adapter can provide up to 250-300 Mbps on networks that support these speeds.

Please note that ultimately, your Internet Service Provider's maximum speed will determine the upper level of performance. Speeds can also be limited by other computers on the network, excessive traffic on a cable connection, or network cabling and devices like switches or routers that don't support higher network speeds.

This adapter will also allow 100Mbps (10/100) networks to transfer data at their fastest available speed.

Have an old laptop which has served me well. Recently the internal 100MB NIC has been dropping out. So, a switch to a USB-A to RJ45 adapter that matches the the old laptop's USB hardware was a fix. Tried a USB-A 3.0 device and had issues. The Plugable USB-A 2.0 to RJ45 device matches the laptop's original USB hardware and now provides 1GB network speeds. Results are obviously noticeable in downloads, browsing, and network file activity. Have another old even slower laptop running as a home file server. This device will aid it too. so a re-order is happening soon.George

I bought the Plugable USB 2.0 to 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN Network Adapter to use with the ASUS Transformer Infinity TF700 and the ASUS USB Kit for Eee Pad Transformer.

The Gigabit Ethernet adapter was detected and installed as soon as I plugged it in. A computer icon with a cable to show up at the bottom of the screen. I then had to go into the settings to turn on Ethernet. It is OFF by default. Once turned on, I then had the option to use DHCP (Dynamic IP address) or a fixed IP address. The default is DHCP, which is fine for most uses.

- The Gigabit Adapter is noticeably faster than WiFi when accessing the Internet. It can transfer up to 480Mb/sec (limited by USB 2.0 speeds).
- The combination of the ASUS USB Kit and the Gigabit Ethernet adapter is somewhat flimsy. This is a limitation of the ASUS USB Kit, which doesn't lock-in when connected to the ASUS port.
- This would be a nice add-on for the ASUS keyboard dock, but I do not have one to test with.
- I suspect that using the USB Gigabit Ethernet adapter would use less power than WiFi, but this has yet to be tested.

I am definitely going to keep this, with the ASUS USB Kit, in my bag when traveling. I suspect that it will come in handy when visiting hotels where WiFi access is poor or non-existent.

I'm a network engineer and I primarily bought this adapter to see if I would be able to use the Transformer Infinity for network troubleshooting. Following guides found online, I installed tcpdump (tcpdump-arm) and the Shark native app (requires root access). I was able to capture packets for the active connection, either the gigabit adapter or WiFi, and transfer the capture file to my PC for further analysis. This is something that I couldn't do on my corporate iPad as, at this time, it doesn't support Ethernet connections.

This is a pretty nice USB to Ethernet adapter. It works out of the box with OS X, which surprised me. I bought it because I read the reviews that it works well with OS X and Linux. It does work with both. Note that USB 2 is only 480Mbps, so you will not get gigabit speed. You will get a lot higher speed from this adapter than you would from Apple's USB to Ethernet adapter (so if you have a Macbook Air and want a higher-speed connection, get this adapter).

I have a little problem with the adapter but I don't think it's Plugable's fault. One of the things that I bought it for was to plug it into my Macbook and connect the USB device to a virtual machine, so that the VM can use the ethernet adapter directly. This is helpful because OS X is very chatty on a network, and so by bypassing OS X you can eliminate any problems that Apple's network junk would cause (it's safer than using "bridged" mode if you have really badly written electronic devices on a control network, for example). I do this with a USB wireless adapter and it works great.

Unfortunately with this adapter it doesn't work, at least not in VirtualBox. I'm sure that this is a problem with Apple's driver or with VirtualBox, so I won't ding the device any stars for that. VirtualBox becomes unstable when trying to share it, and the sharing fails. It is worth noting if you're buying this adapter to do a similar thing, though...as of August 8th, 2011, it doesn't work (latest OS X, latest VirtualBox). I'll comment on this review if and when that problem gets fixed. I hope that it will soon.

This is a fantastic addition to a MacBook Air. I have the latest MacBook Air (as of June 2011) and wanted to add wired Ethernet. I considered buying the Apple USB Ethernet adapter, but stopped because it is 10/100 Mbps only. This Plugable adapter is 10/100/1000 Mbps. It's important to note that the USB 2.0 interface limits the maximum throughput to 480 Mbps max -- so gigabit speeds (1000 Mbps) will never be possible, although I've found the increased performance over 100 Mbps is definitely worth considering this over the Apple adapter.

I just tested some file transfers from my home server to my MacBook Air, and they transferred at 312 Mbps. Keep in mind, this particular test was possibly limited by something other than the raw network speed, however writing to the Air's SSD and reading from the server's disk were probably not limiting factors. This just demonstrates that this interface is much faster than the 100 Mbps maximum available with the Apple adapter.

I strongly value reliability and consistency, and although I've used this device for only a couple days it has worked flawlessly.

Installation was straightforward, but required a driver to be downloaded and installed. There was even a little adhesive tag on my adapter saying "Download the drivers from ..." This was a painless process both on the MacBook Air, and later on a Linux workstation that I tried this device on.

I am very impressed with this device and have no reservations in recommending it to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plugable Gigabit Ethernet Adapter and Nexus 10 HD video playback
Reviewed in Canada on April 18, 2013
For my Nexus 10, I required a wired network connection capable of reliable HD video (720p, 1080i and 1080p) playback from my lan connected video server. WiFi in my bedroom was unreliable even for low bandwidth transcoded videos. Simply put I did not want to compromise the video quality on the Nexus 10's high resolution screen.

This adapter delivered all I can ask and solved an issue I've had for years. I finally get the best video playback that my video collection can deliver.

I rate this product 5 stars because it delivered the performance I wanted and works out-of-the-box with stock Android JellyBean 4.2.x and with any Android version with a Kernel 3.3.x and higher. Just note that some custom ROMs strip out the necessary drivers so if you have installed a custom ROM you may need to make a change. As previously noted the Android stock ROM is not an issue!

I wrote a detailed review which is posted in the XDA Nexus 10 Accessories forum.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sehr empfehlenswertes Produkt
Reviewed in Germany on July 28, 2013

Also durchaus größer als Konkurrenzprodukte.
