This is my 3rd one. All have worked flawlessly - two on Windows 10 and one on Windows 8. All where HP PC's. The only slightly negative thing I would say is the instructions are a little unclear, I mean it says to download the latest driver which I did, but it is not clear about just when you should connect the device (maybe it just does not matter ! ).

What I have done is:
1. Download the driver file and click on it to start it and go through the click steps to install it.
2. Shut the PC completely off.
3. Hook up the Plugable Adapter.
4. Turn the PC back on and it finds the monitor and sets it at the right resolution.

No problems what so ever when I did it this way (all 3 cases), but I think the instructions should be a little more step-by-step.

Funny thing is, I have run into young people that were so close minded that they did not believe that a 2nd monitor is a big benefit. Actually I think they thought it would make them have to work harder. Luckily they quit and I set up two of these PC's before the next two people started! Young people know everything ya know - they are legends in their own minds!

The media could not be loaded.

Soo I've had this item for almost 3 weeks and it was working great but now the item no longer works. It keeps blinking. I have made a video to show you. It does not allow me to do anything. It doesn't even let me configure the settings for the pluggable USB. Be careful with this product. Look at the one star reviewers before you buy! Most of them state after a certain amount of time, it will stop working. I have uploaded videos so you guys can see for yourselves.

Multiple Monitor Setups with VGA to USB Need this Product

I recently revamped my work from home setup and wanted to have multiple monitors connected via VGA to USB 3 ports. After using multiple competitor products, I learned the reason none of those products worked is that the graphics burden of converting VGA to USB 3 is HUGE and as a result, most competitor products do not support multiple monitors easily. These adapters have graphics adapters built in to get around that issue.

End result is that THIS PRODUCT WORKS and my home office is now complete. Literally as easy as plugging in the adapter and the screen is on.

That said, I bought 2 of these adapters and originally, 1 of the 2 did not work. At first, I thought this was more of the same and that this product will not work for me. I reviewed the self help tools on their website, which is pretty clear/easy to navigate, and eventually reached out to their support team to investigate further. I was quickly connected (within minutes) to a real person who helped confirmed the steps I've tried to troubleshoot thus far. Ultimately, it turned out 1 of the 2 adapters was in fact defunct, so he sent me a new one at no cost. It arrived within 2 days and worked right away!

The support contact, who's name may or may not sound like Spam Klorgan, was very helpful, clearly knew what he was talking about, and should definitely get a gold star if his supervisor happens to read this Amazon review.

Summary; this adapter is much better than multiple competitor products I've tried, is designed to work right away, and if it doesn't, they have a support network in place to get you what you need. Will continue to buy Plugable products going forward.

Good For The Price, But Not Perfect

Worked right away with an 8-year-old low-end desktop PC running Windows 10, but videos are more susceptible to some jitter and pixelation. When I'm multi-tasking on the same PC with a full-screen HD video playing on the second 24" monitor, I do see some jittering and pixelation but it's still very watchable and good enough for casual viewing on the side of my desk while working on my PC. There is no apparent quality loss when I switch to a smaller viewing window and don't do a lot of multi-tasking. This USB-to-HDMI adapter is a big improvement over the blurry VGA cable image I used before without having to buy a new graphics card or upgrade my whole PC. If casual viewing is all you need and your PC doesn't have an extra HDMI port, this is a good option to consider. If you're using your PC for serious gaming or primary entertainment, however, you'll probably need a more powerful PC or graphics card to get maximum video quality on both monitors.

Good but some lag/flickering

Worked for my HP Probook 64570b on Windows 10, previously I had tried a cheaper ~£10 usb to vga adapter but with that didn't work I was still limited to 2 external screens (or laptop screen + 1 external). This adapter allowed use of 2 external screens + laptop screen. Easy to setup no driver installation required just plug it in and use the normal windows display options to configure the screens.
However with my 1920x1080 display there was noticeable flickering and lag, maybe this due to the large display, adapter USB connection/chipset or maybe just my laptop - but I have since purchased a similar adapter with the DL-3500 Chipset and USB 3.0 which works much better with my laptop, has almost no lag and can drive higher res screens also. This was from another manufacturer as it was cheaper (see my reviews if you want to know which one) however I notice Plugable do have a similar product so if you wanted to stick with this brand I would suggest getting one of those if you have a large display rather than this one.

Fixed problem of laptop connections

I have a laptop which runs software related to architectural projects and the need to have more than two screens with different information on them.
Problem is with laptops is they only have one HDMI outlet and one VGA outlet which cannot be used at the same time.
Thought was going to have to get a desktop but this little unit (and it is little) has done the job.
There is a slight delay when running video on the screen attached to the device but as the instructions state just use a different screen i.e. the one plugged into the HDMI or one on your laptop for those kind of applications.
If you have a laptop and need more than a laptop screen and one monitor then this will do the job quite nicely.

Multi monitors

I have a laptop with a single HDMI output, which I like and enables me to have a second screen enabled and allows for multi-tasking at least 2 items. But I wanted a third screen. Splitting the HDMI would only allow the 2nd screen to be duplicated so I added this graphics adapter to a USB port. This allows me to again extend the main screen, and so I can have a third screen - all three of which can run different programs. This allows for flexibility and an easier workload. I can read items on screen 3, edit them into a document on screen 2 and have an internet connection on screen 1 to check their reliability. Excellent.

This USB to video converter could not be simpler. Plug it in to an ordinary Windows PC or laptop and the drivers are loaded automatically and your extra display comes alive. Overall an excellent product in normal circumstances.

However my wife like a lot of other people these days is now working from home. She has been issued with an HP Pro Pad laptop. It uses encrypted communications with her workplace and there is secure software installed in the laptop. The net result of these security measures is to restrict access to the fundamental functions of the laptop and to prevent ad hoc software being loaded. Unfortunately this includes the drivers for the USB display converter. So overall I was disappointed in the outcome but not in the product in itself.
I would buy it again.

Works great on Mac OSX

I have 2 older VGA monitors that still work perfectly (Dell E171FP & E172FP), so I didn't want to waste my money and buy another monitor for my Mac mini. Originally I was using a HDMI to VGA converter, but rather than providing a range of resolutions, that converter simply scaled the HDMI signal, which meant that I was wasting about 4" of monitor space on a small 17" monitor. After hunting around, I came across these USB to VGA adapters.

Brief Important points;
+ Mac compatible (tested on 10.8.5 on MacBook Pro & Mac Mini)
+ Provides a range of resolutions up to 2048 x 1152
+ USB Powered, no power cable needed
+ Can be used with HDMI, DVI & VGA cables (adapters are included in the box)
+ Simple to install - download drivers, then plug in, worked instantly

- Not suitable for 3D gaming
- Slight audio lag when watching Netflix, YouTube & similar
- Currently no support for OSX 10.9 (Mavericks)

Detailed information;
- My main concern when looking for one of these adapters was whether or not they would be compatible with Mac OS. I have 2 Macs; a 2009 MacBook Pro, and a 2011 Mac mini, both of which are running 10.8.5 at the time of this review. Most Mac users will know that getting hardware that is compatible with their Mac is sometimes difficult. I had several problems trying to find a USB wifi dongle that was compatible, and I had some trouble finding one of these USB to VGA adapters. I am happy to say that this adapter is fully compatible with Mac OS. I've been using this adapter every day since mid-August (around 2 months) and have had no problems with it. The drivers for 10.8.x are supposedly Beta drivers, but they are extremely stable and currently without problem. Thanks to this adapter, I now have both of my monitors operating at their full 1280x1024 resolution.

- The advantage that this adapter has over my former HDMI to VGA is that this will provide a range of resolutions that makes it compatible with a greater range of monitors. According to the Plugable website, the supported resolutions are 1920×1080, 1600×1200, 1680×1050, 1440×900. 1400×1050, 1280×1024, 1280×768, 1280×720, 1152×864, 1024×768, 800×600, 640×480, up to 60Hz refresh, and 32bit colour depth.

- The output connection from the adapter is DVI, but in the box there are 2 converters, one to convert from this DVI to HDMI, and another to convert from this DVI to VGA, which will cover most, if not all monitors made over the last 15+ years. From what I can tell, the DVI output of this adapter is DVI-i (dual link) which means that both DVI-A and DVI-D cables and monitors should be compatible with this.

- This was really simple to setup. I received an email from Plugable (the manufacturer) a few hours after placing my order which directed me to their download page where I could download the latest drivers. From start to finish, the whole process took less than 5 minutes. I downloaded the drivers following the link from Plugable, plugged the device into my USB port on my Mac Mini, connected my VGA monitor and that's it! The second monitor sprang to life! It really was that simple. As I said earlier, I've been using this every day now for around 2 months, and have had absolutely no problems with it. Considering the drivers for Mac OSX 10.8 are beta drivers I expected some minor problems, but so far, I've had none, and I am really happy with this.

- It is important to note that this adapter is NOT suitable for gaming due to the (relatively) limited bandwidth from USB2 (this is a USB 2 device). It is perfect for day-to-day use such as web-browsing, document editing, email etc., but gaming is not advised. I believe that this is due to the drivers not supporting 3D graphics, but lets face it, if you wanted to do multi-monitor gaming, you'd probably be using a Windows PC with an expensive graphics card, so this is reasonable. I have read that this is not suitable for watching movies (netflix, youtube etc.) but I've not had problems with this. I can quite happily put a youtube or netflix movie playing in my browser over to this second monitor, and apart from a slight lag in the audio (audio is about 0.3 seconds behind the images) there are no problems.

- Finally, at the time of writing this review (end of October 2013), this device is *NOT* compatible with OSX 10.9 (Mavericks). There are several problems with 10.9 and USB monitor adapters. Apple are aware of these problems, so hopefully for the 10.9.1 or 10.9.2 release, these problems will be fixed.

Overall, this is a fantastic adapter that should help to breathe life into older VGA monitors that are still working, and is a far cheaper alternative to buying a new DVI or HDMI compatible monitor, and importantly for some, this is fully compatible with Apple computers up to 10.8.x.
