This album is within the context of what i consider his best era so far. I am not the biggest fan of his recent stuff but listen to it often trying to understand what his approach was intended for. I am an artist myself and always give works of art many tries then if i still do not like it i will re-approach it in a year or several.
With R Plus Seven he is in the territory i love with seriously meditative but not chill sounds. I love how it is mild but not easy to listen to. This guy is a master of his craft which is original. He is the real deal. I have been slowly getting into him for the past 7 years or so with Replica being my favorite. R Plus Seven comes close as well as Returnal but they in my opinion can not match the masterpiece of Replica. I do recommend placing those just mentioned 3 into a playlist and going on a mental journey. If you put say--the past 2 albums in the playlist it kills the vibe. I have tried it.
In conclusion i will not go into detail about the track individually as i already have done that with individual purchases of these tracks from Amazon music. I recommend this album.

Ever since I plunged into Replica I've been curious as to how Lopatin could possibly follow that masterpiece up. Whereas Replica was beautifully sad, R Plus Seven is more optimistic, albeit scary at times. Seemingly random, this album is much more sample-reliant, something I like. That isn't to say there isn't drone and ambiance. There's plenty but this is most definitely a departure in a great way. Anybody who grew up in the 80's and 90's will be hit with nostalgia you can't quite pin down but this is also a very futuristic album. In a way, it's also more musical, using what I think are keyboard and/or actual samples of trumpets, contrabass, organ, bells, windflutes and much more. There's also a good deal of nature sounds, especially water. This gives the album a more wild, even tropical feel that adds to the scatterbrained approach. While it is forward thinking, it isn't cold like Replica. I daresay this will be a polarizing classic of electronic music. Get it now, even if you hate it, it's an adventure you won't soon forget.

It took me a few listens... my initial reaction was, "this is interesting"; as I thought the artist was getting lucky on these tracks. But after repeatedly listens, I started to recognize that this is someone who had a lot of control on the soundscape they were putting together - I am still torn on whether this is an individual in a genre vs one who is a composer... When I say composer, I mean like a Xenakis, Cage, Glass or Autechre. Being this is my first OPN album, I will have to go back find some more of his works and give them a listen - I'm enjoying this album and still trying to determine if my ears are witnessing a level of mastery as befits a composer or someone with bloody good luck.

i haven 't stopped playing this pretty much nonstop since it came out. it's engaging and ignorable, perfect "ambient" music that really runs the gamut and is quite emotional in some parts. a great many of the sounds employed are clean, eighties style "keyboard" sounds, almost like presets or snippets from a sound library cd that Korg made. it's really hard to explain (like all music) but he twists these into new shapes and spaces---the overall effect is very warm and inviting. think the em:t series from the mid to late 90's and you're almost there in terms of wide open digital warmth. it's the closest thing to a modern art of noise record we're likely to get--an exercise in the actual art of noise.

It's hard to describe this album but I'd be inclined to draw the closest comparison to 'Art of Noise' concept albums, or 'Emeralds' or some 'Future Sound of London' Environments / Lifeforms albums. The landscape of sounds are captivating, and Lopatin is creating environments which draw you in and have a level of hypnotism. Like any LP, some tracks are better at this then others, so it's not 5-star perfect, but overall this is an album which does new things in musical composition and concept; few artists can move sound in this fashion--he is not sitting back with his arms folded.

I hope this develops into richer, more lush soundscapes in the future, and R Plus Seven is an important step for this artist.

Listened to Oneohtrix Point Never's new album titled R Plus Seven.
It's really good! I like it even more than Replica, the previous album.
Everything is so spliced, and synthetic----moody and thought provoking.

The fake choirs work perfect. Choppy sound cutting in and out work really well against the soundscapes in the back. I have almost no complaints here.

Samples, experimental, ambiance, nostalgia, avant guarde---
If you like any of these things, or want to see what it's like, I would highly recommend this album!

An imperfect but methodical followup to 2011's Replica, which was my foray into Lopatin's work (and favorite). R Plus Seven sounds like the entrance to some great tomb (cue 2015's Garden of Delete) and it doesn't disappoint.

Combining classical and experimental avant-garde with 21st century electronic music, 0PN is continually at the forefront of modern music.

My favourite album of 2013

With each successive album Daniel Lopatin proves himself to be the most interesting album-orientated producer making music today. Possibly the most interesting musician in general.

When I first heard his music (probably 2009ish) I thought he was a guy with a very nice synth collection, who knew his way around an arpeggiator and could fuse that Tangerine Dream/Vangelis/Steve Roach axis nicely with the hypnagogic sound that was popular at the time. Then with Returnal he went one step further, and after the initial burst of rocket blast noise, showed he had found a new, more focussed sound. The washes of twinkling synth waves weren't the meandering, cul-de-sacs of the Rifts-era albums, but instead resolved, progressed, mutated and most importantly there was much more variation than before. Each track was distinct yet flowed together seamlessly across the album. Then with Replica, rather the the culmination of the years of previous work that Returnal was, Lopatin revolutionised his sound. The smooth, glossy vistas were (mostly) gone, replaced with, at times, angular and jarring samples of piano and videogame snippets. The lush synths are still there, only obscured by the samples and the presence of much more activity in each track. I felt this was a giant leap forward and wondered where he would go from there.

The first couple of listens through R+7, I liked it but only Zebra and Chrome Country really stuck in my memory. Everything else just seemed enjoyable but kind of vague. Some shamisen here, some digital synth choir there, a Philip Glass and Paul Lansky reference here, a bit of booming pipe organ there. But those elements amounted to such a minute part of the whole album. It was the bits inbetween, the parts where I have no clue how or why Lopatin chose to make the musical choices he did that make this album so special. I must have listened to this album over 2 dozen times and yet something new and different would wind it's way into my brain after each listen. I can see some people finding the constant stopping and starting of the music, moving from one idea to next somewhat frustrating, but I think this keeps it from becoming stale at any point, and forcing your ears to actively engage with the music throughout. It's never at any point needlessly abstract or impenetrably cerebral though. There are some heartrendingly beautiful moments on here. The final track especially is like a reward for listening through, Lopatin plopping a slab of pure joy right at the end to perfectly bookmark the work, recycling the organ from the opening track.

If anyone is familiar with Lopatin's Chuck Person moniker, they would know he was a huge influence on vaporwave, and although his Eccojams seems somewhat crude or dated compared to later vaporwave, it's clear that R+7 uses some of the same concepts behind that genre without ever adhering to any of it's tropes. Not wishing to be banal (but I will be anyway) this is post-vaporwave, it's a transcension. I'd imagine he's been influenced by people who were influenced him, and now he's took it to another level to restart the cycle.

Finally, whether you like this album or not, it surely proves that Daniel Lopation is not just a bloke who likes to noodle around on vintage musical equipment, but a skilled and learned musician and, hopefully his art is worthy of your consideration.

If he improves upon this album in the same trajectory that all his other subsequent albums have over their predecessors, then his next album will be a real treat.
