As the synopsis says, popular young rancher, Jordan Harris has just got engaged, and is found dead by Meera. (Really, she will have to stop finding dead bodies – it is so upsetting for her). Stan Miller is on the case again, throwing his (considerable) weight around and generally not achieving very much, although he has matured since the last book, and does his best to solve the murder, while also being grateful for Meera’s help. Sylvie and Jon are struggling as rumours are floating around town about tainted pies, and they beg Meera and her friend, Becky, to help them by doing some investigating. Oh, how Meera’s father, Professor Anand Patel is going to like that! Tony and Becky are involved too, as they were in Bk 1.
Meera is also working on a personal problem and is writing a computer programme to help her, with some timely input from her father (the Patels are an extremely intelligent lot), and this adds another layer to the story. Fast-paced, a lot of investigative action on more than one front takes this book up another level from the first one, and also adds a soupcon of tension. There is plenty of drama and I kept those pages turning.
There is not ‘quite’ so much emphasis on food in this book, but still enough to make me wish I could import one of the cooks in this broth to be my family’s own special cook. (As an aside, where does Meera put all the food she eats?)
The author has an understated humour that is easy to miss, but brings a smile to my face every time I come across a sentence, a throw-away line, or a brief passage. I am very pleased to note that, as in the first book, Meera doesn’t take stupid risks as so many cosy sleuths do. It is very refreshing and the story doesn’t suffer at all, in fact, for me, it makes the story more believable.
This second book in the Meera Patel series is a great follow-up to the first. It is grittier and has more depth, and the writing is more assured. The characters are evolving in a believable way and the Patel family and their friends are a wonderful group of people to spend time with. Well-written and edited, I really enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to the third. I have tried one of the recipes from Bk 1 and my family tell me it was very flavoursome and thoroughly enjoyed it. I still have another one to try. Bon appetit!
