I find this "Pocket" guide to the O.R. very useful for both my operating room nurses and myself. It provides a convenient source for preparations so that the operating team can be more efficient and knowledgeable. The guide is valuable to any member of the operating team, especially with the diverse nature of surgery in the current times. Everyone associated with the Operating Room would find this book a useful addition to their armamentarium and I recommend it highly.

Back in October 2007 I wrote: As a senior nursing student doing my practicum in the OR, this little book offers the best concise information on specific procedures. Great for preparing the night before or in 2 minutes before a procedure. We have a voluminous Medcom series available in our suite, but I haven't touched it since getting Goldman's gem. Our OR nurse educator has taken a look at my copy and is considering recommending it for her new hires. If your need is not immediate, be aware that a new edition will be out in December 2007.

January, 2008-Well the NEW EDITION is here and it's twice as many pages (1200), up-to-date (2007 vs. 1996), 100 new procedures and covers all the newest techniques and technology. As I now start my OR internship as a greduate nurse I look forward to using this new and even better edition of the best portable nursing reference for the OR! It's a bargain for the info it contains!

Having just graduated from school and entering the OR for the first time, I can attest that this is by far one of the best quick-reference texts I've owned yet! I use it every time I have questions on how a surgical procedure is carried out; it includes the surgical goal, equipment and instrumentation necessary, and special considerations for each and every kind of procedure in the book. This book is very useful also because it covers general and specialty surgeries. I highly recommend this for anyone entering the OR for the first time.

I was preparing to take the CNOR exam (after letting it lapse for 10+ years) and ordered this in conjunction with Alexander's. I did not find this book to be helpful in the least. Maybe for a TOTAL beginner OR nurse, this might be useful. Otherwise, I don't think so.

I was recommeded this book by a coworker when I was training to be a circulating RN. Good recommendation. It's pretty easy to carry around. It gives a basic overview of many of the procedures done in the OR, it includes info such as what the procedure is done for, steps of the procedure, and instrumentation used during the case, and other helpful info to give the truly novice circulating RN a background of what to expect during specific surgical case. It is easy to read and understand. I would recommend it as a useful resource for an RN just starting their training in the OR.

This book is a bit bigger than 'pocket' size, lol. Well, in a lab coat, the outer waist level pockets would work but it's not SMALL. It's a paperback & the print is kinda small. I am of the age where I am starting to not only appreciate but LOVE larger print. There are a ton of surgical procedures in here and I know this book is going to help me tremendously as an entry level Surgical Technologist. There is no question about the value of the information.
I do think it's a little pricey but all in all I'm very satisfied. I'll be packing this thing with me every day until I get into the groove of being a new Tech. I did the same thing when I got my Nuclear Medicine degree and license. It's ALWAYS a good idea to have reference manuals in your new position to help you along.
SUMMARY: A little too big to be a called a pocket guide, full of information, print is kinda small, but it's a good tool. It could be a few bucks cheaper and I'd give it 5 stars.

As a former OR Nurse, and now I am an international healthcare industry consultant, I purchased this book to remain current on new procedures, instrumentation, equipment, etc. For one thing, this book is better than my old bible (Alexander's). It is more complete on the "need to know" items. But for me, I will be able to use it for several applications: First, to estimate costs per procedure (owing to instrumentation, time, equipment, staff, prep, medications, etc.) the only improvement I could recommend, Maxine, is put the CPT codes next to the name of the procedure. Second, I consult internationally on medical tourism efficiency, quality, safety, waste mitigation, process and risk-based thinking. this book can be used as a go-to reference for each procedure - both the old ones I know like I know my name, and new ones that became the standard of care after I left the OR. I can also help the medical tourism hospitals create pricing formulas with the information on each procedure.

Maxine, you have my deepest respect and appreciation. This one's a keeper!

As a new nurse and having my first position in an OR, I thought this book would be beneficial. There is TONs of information, but being that instruments aren't taught in our school, I really wish there was an index of those. Otherwise, good study guide. Also a bit too big to carry around in a pocket...
